OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Otahuhu Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. W. T. Clements, presiding. No Street Collection.—Members of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children waited on the council and solicited its moral and monetary support. The Mayor said they were in sympathy with the movement, 'but regretted they could not alter their decision not to allow a collection to 'be taken up. When things brightened up the council might make them an annual donation. Donations.—A request from the local branch of the Plunket Society for assistance was received, and £5 5/ was granted. Unemployment. — The Unemployment Board's No. 2 scheme was received and explained. Councillors were of the opinion that no action should be taken, as its operation would only hurt the men and would be of no 'benefit to the council. It would prevent men from getting an extra day or two from private individuals, as any work undertaken from private employers under this scheme would be deducted from the work allowed under No. 5 scheme. The Mayor said any opposition on their part might mean that their quota of funds would be interfered withi The letter was received. Sinking Funds.—After discussion the council adopted the legal and finance committee's recommendation, "That the Public Trustee be removed from the position of sinking fund commissioner in respect to all loans, with the exception of the Mangere Road Improvements Loan of £11,000, and the Municipal Buildings and Plant Loan of £7600, and that three commissioners be appointed in his place, and that instructions be given to them that all sinking funds be invested in inscribed stock, local body debentures and the redemption of the council loans." The Mayor, Mr. J. V. Lawes and Mr. C. R. Petrie were appointed commissioners. Parks Committee's _ Report. — The Otahuhu Cricket Association, was granted the use of Sturgess Park, subject to four days being reserved to the committee to allocate for other purposes. Two condemned railway carriages have been secured for use as temporary dressing sheds in Sturgess Park, the carnival committee finding the money.
