RACING AT WINGATUI.

DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB. THE SPRING MEETING. SHATTER WINS MOSGIEL HANDICAP. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") DUNEDIN, this clay. The sterling performances by the New Zealand Cup candidate Shatter in the Mosgiel Handicap, and by Guarantee in winning the first South Island ior two-year-olds were the features of the racing at Wingatui yesterday, when the spring meeting of the Dunedin Jockey , Club was opened in fine weather. lhe " three-dividend totalisator was in operation, but it had no apparent attraction for increased investments, the totalisator I handling £7000, as against £9063 for the! first day of the previous spring meeting, a decrease of £2003. A Poor Field. The Spring Hurdle Handicap opened the meeting most inauspiciously, ecratchings leaving only three starters. Antrim Boy \vas sent out favourite. Captain's Gift took the lead at once, and was not headed, j beating the favourite home by threequarters of a length. Shipshape came to grief at the hurdle by his eix-furlong post, but was remounted by another jockey to collect third money. Won Very Easily. A ridiculously easy win was scored by Palantua, a three-year-old filly by Paladin from that good mare Mantua, in the Trial Stakes. She hopped out smartly, but was temporarily hei%led by Mobile and Reminder. She took charge at the home turn, and was six lengths clear at the straight entrance, easing up to beat Worship and Rocket, who was slow to begin, but was travelling very fast at the finish. Blazon also finished well, but Mobile was early beaten. A Close Finish. Thev went solidly for the Clifford filly, Fleeting Glance, in the Maungatua Handicap, but she was not prominent, and Irish Chieftain also lost hie iplace at the start. Shamfight looked to have the race won at the straight entrance, but the Aus-tralian-bred Tippling came fast to beat him by a head. Tippling showed plenty of gameness. For once Irish Lancer moved out promptly, but he was done with at the end of five furlongs. All the Way. The Electric Handicap was won all the way by Fair Weather, who won the McLean Stakes here two years- ago. Blue Metal kept him busy from the threefurlong past, but he lasted long enough to beat Last March, who came with a rush in the straight, by half a head. Tout le Mond was the nnlucky performer. He was very slow away, and then was only half a head behind Last March, whom he was gathering in in the last few strides. It was a good Guineas trial for Tout le Mond.

Scored Handsomely. After getting into trouble in the early stages of the Mosgiel Handicap Shatter won handsomely from Mount Boa in a strong fighting finish. A big striding gelding, Shatter became unbalanced as they left the straight, but L. J. Ellis allowed him to run along down the back at the tail of the field. He moved up very fast on the home bend, and caught Mount Boa near the post. Shatter won like a good one, and his performance will bring him into greater favour for the New Zealand Cup. Red Racer ran most disappointingly, although he has never looked better in his career. He hopped out smartly, and he was not caught till he wa.s half a mile from home, when Toreador and Mount Boa headed him. He showed no dash from then on. Mount Boa made a bold bid, and had all except Shatter beaten at the business end. Muff ran only moderately, while Black Mint's performance suggested that he has seen his best days on the turf. A Smart Performance. There was no doubt about the merit of Guarantee's win in the McLean Stakes, the Paper Money—Entre Nous colt giving Mr. J. M. Samson his second win in succession in this classic. Silvox and June the Third jumped out smartly, with Guarantee behind thfem. He found an opening on the rails, and streaking through, soon had the issue beyond doubt. He won with ridiculous ease. It was n smart performance, outclassing the other competitors. Silvox had every chance, but was not good enough. Guarantee had had the experience of one race, and he proved himself to be a generous galloper. The full sister to Pink Note, June the Third, had caught track watchers' eyes, and she was sent out favourite. Her running was most disappointing. Of the others, the youngster whose performance was most inspiring was that of Trivet, who was galloping on at the finish. Just Failed. Gallant Fox gave indication of something apnroachimr last season's form when the ex-North Islander ran second to .Adelphi in the October Handicap. He was always in charge, and he was only cautrht in the last few strikes hv Adelphi. The New Zealand Cup candidate, Flower, was slow to move, but was doing good work at the finish, and was close up. Ruling Light ran poorly. She is the most disappointing of the Simper family.

The Concluding Event. An easv win was scored bv the three-year-old Silver Streak in the Taimoa Handicap. Arden's Beauty, Silver Streak and Hula Belle began best, and raced together to the home turn. Silver Streak drew out to win well from Molten, who. after being badly left, was travelling fast at the straight entrance. Gold Paper and Arden's Beauty were quicklv done with, while Kerbside was chopped out at the start. Results are:— SPRING HURDLES of lOOsovs. One mile and a half. 2—CAPTAIN'S GIFT, 11.11 — W.
