EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE.

INSPECTION OF BUILDINGS. HOSPITAL WARD RESTORATION. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, Wednesday. Two officials of the Public Works Department, Messrs. J. T. Mair, architect, and C. W. 0. Turner, structural engineer, after their arrival to-day made an inspection of the post office and of the Native Department's building to estimate the earthquake damage. They found the. post office sound, except for the tower, the removal of which they said appeared to be a wise course. One wall of the Native Department's building was damaged, but the opinion was expressed that it might be possible to restore the main portion of the wall and to strengthen it after it had been placed back in proper alignment. The partial reconstruction of the upper portion of the wall may be necessary where severe fractures occurred.

The officers also inspected the Cook Hospital and devised measures for the restoration of the damaged ward, the walls of which were considerably shattered by the earthquake.

While in Wairoa an inspection was made of the nurses' home at the hospital. Mr. Mair 6 aid he did not believe the damage to the building was as bad as it appeared immediately after the earthquake, when the position might have appeared in an exaggerated form by the manner in which the wallboarde had come out of position. Structurally the building appeared to be sound. WBSTPORT DONATION". BOROUGH COUNCIL VOTES £50. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WESTPORT, Wednesday. The Westport Borough Council this evening voted £50 toward the Wairoa earthquake relief fund.
