INSTRUCTION IN SCHOOLS. DEPARTMENT'S-KEEN INTEREST. Particular attention is being given by the Education Department to the teaching of scjence in all schools, post-primary as well 'as primary. Information to this effect was received by the Auckland Education Board at its meeting yesterday.

The matter, advised the Department, had been very fully discussed at the recent conference of . inspectors, and it had been decided that a special effort should be made to increase the efficiency of the teaching in that important subject. Very encouraging reports had been made by several inspectors with regard to the relation of school work to the life of the community, and special reference had been made to the work of agricultural clubs and the vocational training given by groups of farmers in the case of a number of district high schoole. Inspectors had been asked to report "specially on science at all visits

to schools made during the next_ two months, and reports would be available for the use of the board and special Instructors. When the memorandum had been read Mr. J. Patterson commented that the Department had cut out the allowance for science purposes. Mr. S. B. Sims: It is not proposed to introduce laboratories into the primary schools is it? Mr. A. Burns: You are an optimist. It was decided to receive the letter.
