SHOAL BAY.

PLANS FOR NEW ROADWAY.

QUESTION OF RIPARIAN RIGHTS.

The Auckland Harbour Board has approved of the plans for the construction of a roadway and embankment across t a. portion of Shoal Bay to connect Barry's Point with Francis Street. The Takapuna Borough Council was so advised at its meeting last evening.

The Harbour Board agreed to the proposal on the following conditions: (1) That the scheme of the work and all necessary plans be first submitted to and approved by the board; (2) that the Borough Council secure the extinction of riparian rights facing that part of Shoal Bay cut off by the proposed road; and (3) that" proper culverts, bridges, aid other works be provided in the embankment to the satisfaction of the board's engineer.

With regard to the request for the setting aside of the northern area affected by the proposed road as a recreation reserve, the board intimated its willingness to consider this aspect when the council was in a position to submit a scheme for the proposed development of the area.

The Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven, eaid the council could expect some difficulty with owners of riparian rights. One owner had said he would not relinquish hie rights unless he were given a permanent position with the council. "We could not agree to such a suggestion," added Mr. Guiniven.

The council decided to reply thanking the Harbour Board for its -generosity, and to a meeting of owners concerned to discuss the question.
