' -. ?■; ■•»■• ■■ '. • • « The- Ponsonby Croquet Club held a successful bridge afternoon on September 22, in the West End Bowling Club's pavilion. The glorious sunshine and beautiful harbour view greatly added to the enjoyment of the afternoon. Mrs. E. H. Horeley, president, thanked the visitors for their interest in the club, and hoped that as a result of the series of afternoons held during the winter the club would be welcoming many new members. The prizewinners were Mesdaores. Snedden, W. White, and Healfcy. '.Che hostesses.of the tables were Mesdames Horsley, Snedden, Wetherilt, C. Hardley, W. F. Hardley, Black, Oswald, Green, Smith, Hodgson, Thompson, Aitchison, Cormack, Maud, Scoullar, Crowe, Evans, Powley, Lucena, and Miss Burton. The-Papatoetoe relief workers' dance attracted a large number to the Public Hall, Papatoetoe, last evening. The programme, consisting of the popular oldtime dances, was in the hands of Mr. J. Kitto. The music was supplied by Mr. and. Mrs. P. Keddell, Mrs. W. H. Barker, Mr.. Stanley, Mr. Walker, and Miss R. Houndslow, who played several extras. A ladies' committee of Mesdames C. Neweornbe, J. White, W. Postlewaito, anii Gordon attended to the supper arrangements.. A statue waltz held during the evening was won by Miss F. Robinson and Mr. S. Pinfold, and Jlqnte Carlo waltzes by Miss New. and Mr. Brewer, Miss R. Peploe and Mr. Bradbury.

The Cambria Tennis Club held a dance at Devonport last evening, when the Victoria Hall was decorated with black and white streamers,- profusely laden with many coloured balloons. The committee comprised Mesdamcs M. Meiklejohn, G. Strude, J. S. Proctor, and Misses I. Spraggon, M. Copelaud%A. Beere, H. Dunning and R. Williams. Among those present were the Mayoress, Mrs. H. F. Holmes, blue georgette; Miss J. Prince, black floral georgette; Miss T. Houghton, black velvety Miss D. Iline, forest green satin; Miss Ij. Lloyd, apricot organdie; Miss Mi £cott, black net; Miss I.
