CHURCH ANNIVERSARY.

CELEBRATIONS AT ST. MATTHEW'S.

Celebrations of the 79th anniversary of St. Matthew's Anglican Church were opened last evening in the Parish Hall, when some 40 parishioners who had'been attending the church for 30 to 70 years were the guests of honour. The Parish Hall is the former church which replaced the first small building some years ago, and in a short address to the guests the vicar, Canon C. H. Grant Cowen, paid a tribute to both young and old parishioners who had assisted in the development of the church, and he urged them to carry on its traditions. Archbishop Averill, who was unable to be present, sent a letter of congratulation. Mr. W. R. Birss, a lay reader at-the church for 30 years, related amusing incidents connected with the early history of the church; and mentioned one occasion when a large galvanised iron tub was used to do duty as an orthodox font, A birthday cake bearing 79 candles was cut by Mr. R. W. White, a member of the vestry for CO years. On Sunday next festival services will be held, and Archbishop Averill will preach at the evening service.
