' With/ traditional ceremonies the first main, -of "working," session of the twenty-fourth" Parliament of New Zealand -was opened by his Excellency the Governor-General,'. Lord Bledisloe, this afternoon.- . , . . Nineteen guns boomed out a-salute from Point • Jernyirigham as ' the. ViceRegal party left Government House en route to the buildings; Mounted op'po- . site "to the steps of Parliament House was a guard of' honour^-one hundred strong—composed • of 'bluejackets. ■ from the New Zealand Division of the Royal' Naval Volunteer Reserve. • On arrival their Excellencies' were met by the .officer commanding the: New Zealand Defence Forces, Major-General W. L. H. Sinclair-Burgess, and the senior naval officer", Captain C. Sinclair Thompson. . • Following the Poyal salute,.the guard, of honour was inspected by his Excellency, who was then escorted by the Gentleman. Usher of the Black Rod to the dais in the Legislative Council, where the Speech from the Throne (outlining the sessional legislative programme) was delivered in the presence of members of both Houses'.
