SOVIET TRICK?

Oil for Aluminium Wire Deal Rouses Canada. BITTER OPPOSITION. OTTAWA, September 21. The deal by which Russia shipped to Canada a huge cargo of oil in return for products of the Canadian Aluminium Company, which arranged the transaction, is arousing such bitter opposition from Canadian oil interests that the Cabinet is likely to hold a special meeting to discuss the problem.

A Soviet trick is alleged in that the shipment of what was reported to be crude oil proved on arrival at Montreal to be virtually refined gasoline.

The Aluminium Company secured permission for the deal from the Prime Minister, Mr. R. B. Bennett. It is reported that Mr. Bennett now contends the Canadian companies are not playing fairly with the public in using the heavy protective tariff to squeeze out independent companies. EMPIRE RECOVERY. CONFIDENCE AND WORK. LONDON, September 21. Mr. W. M. Hughes, formerly Prime Minister of Australia, was entertained by the Overseas League at a luncheon in Glasgow. Mr. Hugh C. Cree, president of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, presided over a large attendance. The Duke of Montrose in toasting Mr. Hughes, paid a war.m tribute to his great services to the Empire in the war and after the war. He said Mr. Hughes' visit surely would strengthen the ties between the Scottish and Australian peoples. Mr. Hughes, in replying, expressed his firm conviction that the Empire would emerge from the depression triumphantly if the people had confidence and backed this by work. In the afternoon Mr. Hughes met representative shipowners and-merchanta and discussed means of fostering direct trade between Australia and Glasgow. He was tendered a dinner by the Incorporated Guild of Tailors.
