PACIFIC MAIL SERVICES.
The R.M.S. Monowai arrived at Wellington from San Francisco on Sunday morning last, some twenty-four hours under schedule running. Under the circumstances, one might reasonably Jiave expected that the vessels departure for Sydney would bo accelerated so as to enable our trans-Tasman neighbours to reap the benefit of iher fast passage across the Pacific and receive their mails well ahead of the regular time-table. Instead of that the Monowai spends nearly three days lying alongside the Wellington wharf. Could anything be more ridiculous? The Union Company is playing right into tiho hands of rivals, and unless its services are speeded up the time is not far distant when there will be jm> maila for them to carry, and consequently no subsidy from the New Zealand Government, W.H.P.
