SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

I The monthly meeting of the journalis?n section of the League of Penwomen, held in the league's rooms on Tuesday evening, was devoted to the reading of 'several interviews. They were followed by the announcement of the winners' names of the previous month's short stories, poems and articles chosen for the journalism magazine. The reading of the selected stories was followed by supper. Members present were: dames Boswell, Arthur Griffiths, Innes, Bennett, Mortimer, McLean, Ponder, the Misses Peacock, Mcintosh, Quill, Burton, Brockway, Rogers, Melville, Armitage, .Whitehead, Hutton, Whitelaw, Davison.

The social gathering of the Dunedin Club, held last evening at the Girls' Inter-house clubrooms, Chancery Street, was arranged as "A Hikers' Nnght." During the evening hikers' honours were bestowed on Messrs. J. A. C. Allum, H. F. Wright and Dickison. Prizes -were awarded for an amusing number, entitled "The Rabbit Dance." For nondancers bridge and trump whist was arranged. Mr. and Mrs. R. Lowry were host and hostess. The latter wore a black georgette, with floral coatee. Mr. Percy Shaw was the master of ceremonies. Among those present were: Mesdames W. McKay, E. A. Allan, H Wilson, R. A. Cornish, J. Oliver, Leo Piper, Dodd, N. Aplen, A. W. Smith, J. Warner, Lindsay Anderson, Markwick, E. Eccles, Angwin, Galloway, J. Dickerson, H. Burton, Graham, T. King Sloman, S. J. Davis, J. Rough, Misses J. Wilson, Oram, W. Walton, E. and D. Eccles, J. Shepherd, Marshall, McLean, G. Hamilton, V. Hamilton, M. Brown Angwin, E. - Summer, G. Hill, Booth, Long/Murray, Graham, D. Behan, and Coleman. •

The Auckland Amateur Operatic Society gave at At Home at their rooms Grafton Eoad, laet evening, and it was attended by a large number of visitors and members. A programme was rendered by "The Co-optimists," under the du-eetion, of Mr. George F. Moody, as follows: Opening chorus, "Old King Cole"j, sketch, "Juliet"; chorus, "Fairy Tales of Ireland" and "Carry Me Back to Virginia," "When the Guards Are Marching By"; sketch, "Mother's Vote"; solo, Miss Gladys Wilson, "A Kitchen Quartet"; . sketch, "Married Bliss"; humorous item, Miss Hilda Moree, "Pirate Trio"; eolo, Miss Gladys McAneney; chorus, "The Fishermen's Chorus," "To-day I Feel So Happy"; sketch, King and Country," The Prima Donnas, eolo, Les O'Leary, "Wild Kose"; Easter hymn and. final chorus. Supper ■ and dancing finished a bright entertainment. The: performers were: Misses Gwen Warren, Gladys McAneney, Ivy Musker, Peggy Cutting, D. Lock, Beryl Prentice, Gladys Wilson, Hilda Morse, Messrs. A. Prentice, H. Lock, M. Alexander, Arthur Walton, Keith Smith M, : Clark, Jack Odliri and G. Moody. The orchestra, which added to the' bright programme comprised Mrs. S. W. Clark, Mias ' Ida Lockwood, * and Mr. Meryyn Adams.
