STEAMER PUTS BACK.

FIVE STOWAWAYS ABOARD. HEAVY EXPENSE INCURRED. MAXIMUM PENALTY SOUGHT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Although she had been at sea ten hours, the steamer Tairoa, en route for London, put back on account of the finding of five stowaways. They appeared in the Police Court this morning, when the maximum penalty was sought, in view of the risk of fire when men indulged in smoking while hidden in cargo, and in view of the frequency of the offence. Each man was sentenced to one' month's imprisonment, they* were: Alan Carter, 21; Joseph Muldownie, 27; George Ernest Carter, 24; Charles Richard Griffiths, 22; Richard Knox, 22. Captain Kershaw explained to Mr. E. Page, S.M., that heavy expense had been incurred in putting the Tairoa back to Wellington, and in addition there was the possibility that the delay would put the vessel out of her regular running, with consequent loss of trade to the company.
