UNFIT FOR HARD WORK.
MEN IN PAEROA CAMP.
PROGRESS OF EXPERIMENT. COMFORTABLE CONDITIONS. The A 2 unemployment camp at Paeroa, the only one of its kind in the Dominion, was visited recently by Dr. Vivian and Mr. Birchall, of the Labour Department, who expressed satisfaction with its conduct and appearance. The camp, on the Paeroa racecourse, is ideally situated for the health and comfort of the men who are sent to it by the medical officer of the Labour Department. The 50 men at present in the camp are well catered for by a good cook, and the food supplied to them is of the highest quality. There is a wireless set installed in the main room, of the camp, and each man pays a small sum weekly towards the hire and upkeep. At the present time the men are employed on road work, but eome will be sent out to work for farmers on the "over the fence" scheme when they have been tried out and arrangements completed. Mr. W. Marshall, the county chairman, is confident that this experiment will be successful, and it is wholly due to his capable handling of the arrangements that the camp has been made such a comfortable place for men who, in the opinion of the medical officer, are not lit for hard work of all kinds.
That the camp is run on economical lines is shown by the fact that, since the commencement, the. men have paid only 9/6 each per week for their food, lighting and cook's allowance.
