GAS LEAKAGES.

SERIOUS LOSS AT GISBORNE. MANY FRACTURES IN MAINS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, Wednesday. "As the result of the earthquake numerous fractures have been caused in our system of gas mains, making it necessary for us to increase our production considerably during the past few days, which in itself will mean serious loss to the company," said Mr. O. Prince, manager of the Gisborne Gas Company, when asked to what extent- the mains had been damaged. Already a large number of repairs had been carried out, ho said. Although no accurate estimate of the loss of gas could be made the company had an approximate idea of the quantity by hasing its calculations on the production figures at the works. At one stage production had to be increased by as much as 20 per cent, but lately this quantity had been reduced somewhat as repairs to the mains were carried out.

A large number of people, especially those whose chimneys had been brought down, had increased their consumption, and it gave some idea of the quantity of gas that was reaching the air as the result of being lost through breakages in mains.
