GERMAN CLUB.

The recently-formed. Auckland German Club held its official opening last evening. _ The function took placo in Milne and Choyce's reception hall, and ther ® , w . ae a large number of members alid visitors present from various city clubs and organisations. The large room wa» beautifully decorated for the occasion with bowls of golden daffodils, which made delicate liarmony with, the light green furnishings and deep cream walls, and in the entrance were tall green palms. On the stage at the far end of the room, where the orchestra was seated, was the German flag, and draped on either side were the Union Jack and the New Zealand flag. The orchestra of 27 players was under the direction of Mr. Henry Engel, and enjoyable selections were played during the evening. Excellent music was later supplied for dancing. Songs were sung during the evening by Sirs. Nello Porter and ■ vocal quartets with , supporting voices jvere given by Messrs. E. Churchhouse, Schmitt, Dephoff, .Davis, Mesdames Watts, Nello McMillan, Schmitt and Miss Plummer. The orchestra was very much appreciated. Amongst the selections they gave were the concert interpretation of the "Blue Danube," the overture to "Figaro," as well as a medley of German folk songs. The music was greatly enjoyed, as it was of outstanding merit from a musical point of view. Anunusual feature was Chopin's Polonaise, danced by about 40 couples. The dance ended up with a Viennese waltz, which was loudly applauded. On their arrival the guests were received by the president, Mr. O. J. Thedens, and Mrs. Thedens, the latter wearing a frock of black cobweb lace with natural spray of flowers on the shoulder, and a coatee of apricot coloured velvet. Early in the evening Mr. Thedens extended a hearty welcome to all present and stated that the membership of the club was now 100.
