PUGNACIOUS MAGPIE.
RAPIDLY ON THE INCREASE
DAKGEROTJS WHEN NESTING.
SWOOPING DOWN ON CHILDREN.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. "The magpie has undoubtedly increased rapidly within the last few years," stated the- ranger, Mr. Andrews, in a report presented to the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. "I recently reported on tho pugnacious temperament of this bird and pointed out that it is a positive danger when allowed to build its nests where children are in the habit of playing." The ranger added that magpiea were not a grave danger to bird life because they were essentially birds of open pastures and disliked ground cover of any sort. Ranger Wilson reported that farmers generally spoke highly of magpies, but agreed that they were pugnacious during the nesting season. One farmer stated that he had to shoot two magpies because they swooped down on children when the latter were passing within 50 yards of the tree in which the birds were nesting.
