"We do not want cyclists to gain the idea that motorists are trying to drive them oil the roads, when we are really attempting to safeguard them," said Mr. A. Grayson, president of the Auckland Automohile Association, at a meeting of | the couiicil last evening. "Motorists are not pressing for the compulsory introduction of rear lamps for cycles." The president's comment followed the presentation of a report from the chief patrol of tallies taken of the number of unlighted bicycles. The first tally was taken on the Great South Road at Westfield on August 22, one patrol noting cyclists travelling northward at Portage Road and the other patrol observing south-bound traffic. The second was taken on the evening of August 29 at each end of Broadway, Newmarket. The tallies were made between 4.30 p.m. and six o'clock. The report stated that of 490 cycles observed, 402 had no front lamp, 220 had no reflector, 209 were without a white-painted rear mudguard, while 49 had no rear mudguard at all. At Broadway, there were 258 cycles, of which 209 were without a headlamp, 130 without a reflector, 113 without a white mudguard and 31 without a rear mudguard. Of the 241 cycles observed at Westfield. 193 had no lamp, 90 had no reflector, a. similar number had no white mudguard and 18 had no rear mudguard. Copies of the report will be sent to the Auckland City Council, the One Tree Hill Borough Council and the Mount Wellington Road Board.
