TEMPERANCE CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS.

NEW LODGE OF JUVENILES.

PROGRESS OF THE ORDERS,

All over the world this month the Temperance Societies are celebrating the centenary of the signing of the first total abstinence pledge at Preston, England. The movement started by those seven men of Preston, led by Joseph Livesey, has grown beyond their wildest expectations, and it seems now only to be a matter of time when their dreams' will become realities. In connection with the local-celebrations, the Temperance Friendly Societies have united with the W.C.T.U. and the New Zealand Alli'ancc, and several gatherings have been arranged in different suburbs. - . ! *• * * *. The Ponsonby Branch Grand United ■ Order of Oddfellows continued their social programme, when they entertained their friends to a card evening 'and dance in the Renall Street Hall on Tuesday last. The event was well attended, and proved quite enjoyable. The card games resulted in Mrs. T. Teague winning the first prize, and Mrs. White the consolation prize, for the ladies, and Bro. A. Conway the first and Mr. T. O'Flaherfy the gentlemen's consolation prize. After supper, dancing was indulged in, the music being kindly supplied by Mrs. W. L. Patterson and Mr. Phil Prescott. So successful did this function prove that a similar evening has been arranged for Tuesday, September 27. * » * » The Gordon Tent, 1.0. R., held a social evening in their tent room on Tuesday evening, a large crowd of members and visitors being present. A welcome was extended to the visitors by the Chief Ruler, Bro. Pace, who expressed special pleasure at seeing Bro. Francis, D.D.C.R., Bro. Bodley, D.S., also the members of the 1.0. G.T. The programme was in the hands of the Enterprise Lodge members of the 1.0. G.T., and a very happy time was spent. A competition was won by Sis. Mrs. Francis and Bro. R. Wcntworth. Bro. ! Bodley gave a short address on the centenary of the temperance movement, after which supper was served by the ladies under the direction of Sis. Mrs. Campling. The social was a great success everybody having a real good time. * » * * The Light of Manukau Lodge U.A.0.D., held their fortnightly meeting on Wednesday evening, A.D. Bro. Hadwin being in the chair. There was a good attendance of members and visitors, an official visit being also received from the District President. 'Arrangements were made by request of the D.P. for some of the members to attend the anniversary celebrations of the Kia Ora Lodge, Pukekohc, on September 15. Bro. McMillan, P.A., was appointed Press reporter during the absence on holiday of P.D.P. Bro. A. Mackay. During the harmony session refreshments were served and a good programme of vocal and instrumental items presented. The Light of Manukau Lodge's orchestra was in attendance, and received a great hearing for their items, which were well given. * * * » The Loyal Dominion Lodge, Manchester Unity, 1.0. Oddfellows, held its fortnightly meeting last Tuesday evening in the lodge hall, Carmen Avenue, Dominion Road. The Noble Grand, Bro. Stubbing, presided, and quickly dealt with the business. After lodge closed, supper was served by the stewards for the evening, and dancing, cards and community singing was much enjoyed. » » » *

The fortnightly meeting of the Epsom Lodge, No. 88, 1.0.0. F., was held in the Royal Oak Hall on Tuesday evening, Bro. Ea6tman presiding as N.G. over a very large attendance of visitors and members. The nomination of officers for the new term resulted as follows:— Noble Grand, Bro. N. Whale; financial secretary, Mro. Eastman; recording secretary, Bro. H. Jessop; treasurer, Bro. G. Whale. These were all elected unanimously, Bro. Eastman returning to his old position after a successful term in the Noble Grand's chair, where his knowledge and experience proved very helpful to the members. A ballot will be necessary to fill the position of Vice-Grand, three capable members in , Bros. Bourdot, Pawley and R. Whale haying been nominated. The social committee's report was held over until next lodge night. The degree master briefly referred to the excellent service being rendered by the Degree Lodge. Shortly before 8 p.m. the meeting was closed and the hall prepared for a grand concert and dance, to which friends were admitted. A varied programme of vocal instrumental and dance items was ther given most capably, many encores being demanded by the large audience. • » » * The Youthful Enterprise Temple 1.0. G.T., met on Thursday evening, Bro Irwin German, C.T., presiding over a good attendance. One new member waf initiated, bringing up the roll numbei to over 70. The members were asked bj the G.S.J.W. to bring photos and let ters to send to other countries, when juvenile Templars were willing to senc others in exchange. When the business had been concluded the children had i merry time with some games. The Devonport Lodge, U.A.0.D., hac a good attendance at their last meet ing, which happened to be quarte: night. Bros. Ross ant Wouldes won the pairs by beating Bros Robinson and Tye, whilst Bro. Die! Davies just beat Bro. Edwards in thi singles. » * * * A new Juvenile temple of the Inter national Order of Good Templars wa: instituted at Three Kings on Mondaj evening. The officers of the Youthfu Enterprise Juvenile Temple, Onehunga took control of the opening ceremonies Bro. T. German, J.C.T., presiding. Tin grand superintendent of juvenile work Bro. Pace, asked the superintendent o youthful enterprise to conduct th initiation ceremony. Fourteen candi dates, six brothers and eight sisters were then received into the Order. Cant as installing marshals. The G.S.J.W. congratulated the officers upon their election, and wished the new temple every success. He conveyed •greetings from the G.C.T., Bro. Petherick, the G.S., Bro. Price, Bro. Rennie, P.G.S.J.W., and the Christchurch, Wellington and Ashburton temples. Sister M. C'hadderton, the superintendent of the new temple, was presented with her commission. The newly-elected C.T. briefly thanked the members for electing him to the high position, and promised to do his best for them all. Congratulations were offered on behalf of the Auckland temples, and by Bro. Chadderton, sen., Bros. C. Walker and Peacock, also Sisters Mrs. Cannon and N. Cannon. The Youthful Enterprise members were thanked for their assistance, great ■praise being given to them for their splendid work. The new temple has a good field of service, and is looking forward to a most successful time.

* • • • A great united church parade of the temperance societies was held in the 'Methodist Church, Onehunga, on Sunday morning, when members of the W.C.T.U., Independent Order of Rechabites and International Order of Good Templars gathered to celebrate the centenary of the total abstinence movement. The church was crowded, extra seating being necessary. The service was conducted by the-Rev. E. S. Harkness, who gace a powerful address on the temperance movement. A solo was beautifully sung by Mrs. J. Craig, whilst the choir rendered an anthem.
