"CUT" IN SUSTENANCE.
PROTEST SUPPORTED.
"DEMORALISING CONDITIONS."
The Dcvonport Borough Council last evening decided to support the local Unemployed Association in its. protect against the reduction in sustenance. "Many people are of opinion that the 'dole' is better than relief work," remarked the Mayor, Mr. H. F. W. Meikle. "That is a matter of opinion, but I think we should support the association in the present case. When a man is unable to work and the small amount he receives' is otit down, it is very, very hard." Mr. G. Falla said New Zealand should be congratulated on its care of the uncmploved. An Australian acquaintance of his had remarked: "I'm glad you have no dole; it is a most demoralising thing." The Mayor: When a man \«>rks up to his waist in water and gets only 7/0 a week, could there be anything more demoralising, than that?
