SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

On Wednesday afternoon the girls' branch of the Victoria League held their monthly bridge party at the Evelyn Firth Home for returned soldiers. Prizes were won by Mr. Chaney and Mr. Jellings. Among the players were: Misses W. Kent (convener), Isabel McLachlan, Linda De Renzie, Maureen and Nancy Abbott, D. Beere, Tilly Rountree, and Mavis McCullough. * * * * A card party and progressive 500 tournament « r as held by the members and friends of the Holy Cross Catholic Church in the school at Henderson on Monday night. Tho prizewinners were Mrs. Lawn 1, Mrs. Hallas 2, and Mr. Iveary 1, Mr. Skinner 2. Tlhese functions are to be held at frequent intervals and the funds derived .from them used for reducing the debt upon the new Convent school. • * * » A most enjoyable evening was spent by members of the Auckland Toy Dog Club last evening at the home of Mrs. S. Ward, Richmond Road. Mrs. Ward received her guests in a black georgette and lace frock. Various games and competitions were provided and the evening resulted in a good profit to the club funds. Among those present were: Mesdames G. Hunt, Wilkins, Joseph, Newdick, Shaw, Cowley, Porteous, Reid, McGaw, Compton and Whyman, Misses Dalton, Price, Porteous, Winders, Peggy Winders, Blair.

A dance, organised by the Tennis Club in aid of the club funds, was held in the Town Hall, Tirau, on Saturday evening. The hall was attractively decorated with masses of wattle and bamboo, and a snow effect, mingled with blue and gold, made a pleasing ensemble. The statue waltz was won by Miss Stewart and partner. The members of the committee were: Mrs. R. T. Smith, green satin; Mrs. V. L. Drummond, blue silk net; Mrs. H. Loudon, black satin; Mrs. H. Eees, black satin; Mrs. K. Bicknell, blue georgette. Among others present were: Mesdames Leggatt, Dickson, Dukeson, Butler, Hudson, Henshaw, Bailey, Aylward, Misses Barnett, Campdell, Johnston, Fyfe, Jones (Rotorua), Sloper, Judge, Hooper, Howland, Hughes, Brown (Auckland), Lowe, Henshaw, Lopdell, Gallagher, Bailey, E. Pearce, Guillard, Woodgate, King, Duff, M. Beca, A. Gray, McNally, and Dobson. A flag bridge evening in aid of the funds of the Croquet Club was held in the Scout Hall, Putaruru, on Tuesday. The hall was charmingly decorated with fern and blue and gold streamers. On behalf of the club Mr. Paxton thanked those present, and presented prizes _to Mesdames J. Francis and R. T. Smith arid Mr. P. C. Barnett. The consolation prizes went to Mrs. V. Bailey, Miss McLaren and Mr. J. Yandle, jun. The monthly meeting of the Mount Albeit Ladies' Aroha League was held at the residence of Mrs. Smythe. A letter of thanks and appreciation was received from Mr. Thomas, secretary of the Mount Albert Welfare League thanking the Aroha League for their generous offer of coal to the needy of that district. Another ton of coal was given this month, making a total of four tons. Mrs. Carr Smith, convener of the sewing circle of the Hospital Auxiliary, speaker for the afternoon, was welcomed by Mrs. Smythe, and demonstrated how old garments were cut out and made up into new garments for the sick poor of the hospital. Mrs. Tremain, on behalf of the members, thanked Mrs. Carr Smith for her interesting address. * « » » The Loyal Manurewa Lodge, Manchester Unity, Oddfellows, held its annual ball in the local theatre last evening. The attendance was the largest ever recorded during the eleven annual functions which have been held .by the lodge, representatives being present from surrounding lodges as far apart as Avondale and Pokeho. The grand march was led by the N.G., Bro. L. Reeves and partner. Official visitors present included Bro. Pitcher, Past District Officer. "The theatre was elaborately decorated for the occasion, a network of streamers contrasting effectively with ferns and other greenery. Numerous Chinese lanterns added to the gala effect. Popular music was supplied by the Blind Institute Band, individual members also supplyng the extras. Elocutionary and instrumental items were also contributed by members of the band. A dainty supper was served by the ladies of the committee. * * * * A pleasant social function ill honour of Miss Irene Hankins took place at the residence of Mrs. F. Pearson, Haultain 'Street, Mount Eden. Mrs. Pearson received the guests wearing royal blue spotted silk, relieved with beige. Miss Hankins wore a wine and beige crepe de chine and lace frock. The rooms were prettily decorated with masses of spring flowers in gold and white. A dainty afternoon tea was served to the following guests: —Mesdames C. E. Hankins, E. J. Hankins, McXab, Munroe, Sharp, Penman, Nicholl, McMurtrie, McCarthy, Judd, Jury, Frith, Scott, Bush, Shaw, Edwards, Leitz, O'Brine, McCarty and Simpson, and Misses Shaw and Robinson and Mr. Garrett. The Parish Hall, Otahuhu, presented a scene of gaiety on Tuesday evening, when a dance was held by the Holy Trinity Social Club, the occasion being tho annual, visit of the St. Matthias' Social Club, Panmure. The hall was. beautifully decorated with coloured streamers, and a good orchestra kept the dancers in a merry mood. The visitors were welcomed by tho Rev. R. J. Stanton, the patron of the Otahuhu Club, Mr. J. Allen, president of the Panmure Club, responding. The programme, which comprised a splendid selection of old-time dances, included two Monte Carlo waltz competitions, the successful couples being Mr. C. Cross and Miss A. Cross and Mr. L. Grey and Miss N. Willstead. During supper extras were played by Mrs. N. Walters and Miss K. Fenton. Cards were also played, tho 500 being won by Mrs. R. Durbridge and Mrs. J. Dunn and' thebridge by Mr. H. Fearnley and Mr. L. Hubbard. The Auckland Police Social Club held an enjoyable social and dance at the Symondsville Dance Studio last evening. During the evening a demonstration of the clog waltz was given by Miss J. McLaughlan. Among those present were: Mrs. J. D. McKenzie, who wore a frock of cameo pink georgette and Cliantilly lace; Miss Edith Gregory, powdered blue satin and white velvet coatee;. Miss Pearl Gregory, blue and pink flowered georgette; Miss E. Green, orange and brown lace; Miss Marion Fairless, black lace and red coatee; Miss M. Doyle, black satin and gold lace; Miss M. McLaughlan, white satin and pink and black relief; Miss Zoe Madigan,. emerald green organdie; Miss L. Doel, black lace; Miss V. Gates, jade satin beaute; Miss G. Anderson, ivory satin; Miss O. Hickey, Nile green and black flowered chiffon; Miss K. Hickey, black satin and brocaded lame; Miss Chrys. Muir, white net over satin; Miss E. Minnear, turquoise blue georgette; Miss E. The Agricultural Department lias induced several ladies, famed for their jam and jelly making successes, to make a large range of preserves from Fiji fruit. These are being sent at Government expense, to a big canning contest in Aurora, Illinois, organised by a firm of fruit jar manufacturers. The first prize for the foreign section will be 500 dollars. After being exhibited at Aurora, the -preserves will be sent on to Chicago, where they will be shown at the Century of Progress Exhibition in 103:;. * * » * A social evening was held in the Woodhill Hall on Saturday, as a farewell for Miss Jessie Quarrie, of Parakai, who is leaving the district to take up nursing duties at Whangarei. On behalf of the residents of the district, Mr. S. Phillips presented Miss Quarrie with a fountain pen, engraved with her initials. Two bouquets were presented by Miss Bluebell Mackic, on behalf of the members of the Woodhill Women's Institute, and by Mrs. Ted Phillips, from friends in the district. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs. Woodbridge and Mr. Bob Shanks (Kaukapakapa). A statue waltz was won by Miss Hinds (Kaukapakapa) and Mr. A. Phillips. # * » » . The usual weekly meeting of the Henderson Young Women's League, held in the supper room of the Town Hall on Wednesday night, took tho form of a social, to wnich the general public, but more especially the unemployed girls of the district, were invited. A fairly large audience was present, mostly young men and women, with a number of older persons interested in the welfare of youth. Miss Stella Bond presided. Games and competitions occupied most of the evening and songs were rendered by Mies Daphne Melville and Miss Stella Bond, with Mesdames Bond and Knipc as accompanists. The elocutionary part of the programme was provided by Miss Ellis, a member of the Henderson Women's Institute, whose contributions were greatly appreciated, her representation (in costume) of Mre. Hodson. the London Cockney woman, and her visit to the pictures, was specially enjoyed.
