OLD RATES DEMANDED.
GISBORNE WATERSIDERS.
OVERTIME DISPI'TE.
LOADING OF OVERSEAS SHIP.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, this day. Overtime at the shipping companies' new rates was refused yesterday by Gisborne watersiders engaged to work the Piako, which arrived at 3.5 p.m. \ from Wellington for homeward loading. A call for labour for the vessel was made as usual, and three barges, two of mutton and one of butter, with full equipment, drew up to the Piako as soon as she dropped anchor. It was then nearly 4 p.m., and as the time when overtime rates would become payable was approaching the watersiders were advised that they would be called on to work overtime. The men insisted that overtime rates should be as provided under the old award. The company would not agree' to grant these conditions, and accordingly the harges were towed back to the wharf without any work having been done on the vessel. It is understood that a stop-work meeting was held yesterday morning by the watersiders and that their action in the afternoon was the outcome of their deliberations.
