COLOURS OF THE 58TH.

A MISSING 'FRAGMENT. RESTORED TO THE MUSEUM. When it was announced recently that the authorities at the Auckland War Memorial Museum were skilfully restoring the time-worn colours of the 58th Piegiment, the oldest war souvenir in Auckland, mention was made of the fact that there were parts of the regimental colour missing. One of the missing pieces is now being restored b£ Messrs. Charles Petley and PatricK Petley, of The Mount, Tauranga, sons of the late Captain Petley, an officer in the 58th, who settled in Auckland. Mr. F. A. Jones, of Kaleigh Road, Northcote, who married a daughter of Captain Tetley, had several silhouettes of officers of the regiment, and these have been handed to Mr. Gilbert Archey, director of the Museum, so that they can be placed close to the regimental colours when they are again hung. Mr. Jones knew that there was a piece of the regimental colour in the Petley family, and fco communicated with his brothers-in-law. The fragment was treasured in the family for many years. When the Messrs. Petley knew that the colours were being renovated, they were pleased to hand over the missing fragment, and. they sent it up to Mr. Jones with a request that it be handed to the Museum. There is still another souvenir of the 58th which would be interesting if it could be located, and that is a diary kept by Captain Petley. It has been missing for a number of years, having been left with some people who have all sinee died. Mr. Jones would be pleased to- hear of the diary if it is still in existence, ns he thinks it should join the other 58th relics at the Museum.
