HOCKEY.

DEVONPORT SHIELD. THREE TEAMS LEVEL. The Devonport Shield competition was continued at the Remuera grounds under good playing conditions on Saturday. Play throughout was fast, and as the result of a dra,wu game between St. Luke's and University, these teams are level with Somerville for the trophy. The Somer-ville-Mount Eden game ended in a victory for the whites by three goals to nil. MOUNT EDEN V. SOMERVILLE. Mount Eden opened the attack, but were stopped by Moore, then Glanville's hit was intercepted by Mainland, and Mount Eden invaded the circle. Hedges cleared with a I reverse stroke. Further pressure forced ,~the whites. Good work by Wellbourne enabled Somerville to break away, and E. Watts had a shot, which was sent to the sideline. A nice combined rush saw Mount Eden away from a long hit by Horspool, but Hayson's smart pass went to the line. A couple of free hits saw Somerville ad : vance, Wellbourne and E. Watts making desperate efforts to score. An unaccepted pass saw Somerville goal-hunting again, Wellbourue hitting the outside of the net, and a moment later C. Watts dragged the ball in the same direction. J. Horspool picked up a long hit and worked into foreign territory. Gurr relieved, and an exchange of hits between Hedges and A. 1 Horspool saw Mount Eden away, but Jenkins, hard-hitting, forced Somerville twice in succession. Somerville worked upfield. and after a well-planned, but lucky, movement, shot wide. Mount Eden broke loose and Horspool advanced along the right flank, and his centre shot produced a free hit. Fri.u the ensuing play Clark shot wide. Maintaining the attack, Somerville suffered another corner. Working play to halt'wav the Somerville forwards engineered "a splendid piece of combination, and Mount Eden were lucky to escape. Somerville renewed the attack, and a corner was resultless. However, they were not to be denied. After some aerial work E. Watts put the ball into the net just on the call of half-time. When the game restarted Somerville were first away and a lone centre by Maxwell was just out of reach. A. Horspool returned and Jansen put in an old-time run, winding up with an excellent centre. Play cravitated between the two circles, until several smart attacks kept Mount Eden on the defensive. While their goal was hotly bombarded Mount Eden were reinforced by the return of Hayson. who was compelled to retire in the first spell owing to an injured wrist. Hard hitting enabled the browns to clear. Somerville retaliated and gaining the circle. Wellborne scored. Somerville 2. Mount Eden 0. After Mount Eden had conducted a brief attack. Somerville were asain on the move, but a twentyfive resulted. A run along the right flank gave Horspool a chance to centre, but he hung on too long. Smith removed 'he danger, and the forwards made further progress. Maxwell accepted a nice pass and" beat Oliver. Somerville 3 Mount Eden " Messrs. E. J. Hewitt and C. Preston refereed.

ST. LUKE'S V. UNIVERSITY.

A'ter a bout of even play McLeod dashed through to the student*' circle, and after exciting moments the blues were relieved with a free hit. An accident to Broun caused a stoppage, and upon resuming St. Luke's from a free hit reached the circle. Ellison made a timely clearance and play drifted to mid field. Broun raced to the reds' circle, where Williams checXe-1 progress. The reds quickly advanced to the blue quarters, when McLeod shot and Crawley kicked clear. Still the pressure was oiaintained until Brown turned the ball outside the net. A big hit by Williams again set the red vanguard in motion. Brown shot, and Crawley kicked clear. W. Burnett jumped and shot, but gave sticks, and a free hit eased the blues. The let-ofT was appreciated, and the students swept down the left. A cross-hit was taken by Ross, and back went the net. University 1, St. Luke's 0. The second spell opened with an attack for St. Luke's, led by Vipond. Radcliffe cleared, but Clarke returned and exciting minutes in the bines' circle followed till Ross cleared to Smith. Mcl-eod stayed progress at half way and from a roll in the reds attacked, gained a penalty corner and missed the net. Back cdme the reds for W. Burnett to finish the movement with a great angle shot that netted. University 1. St. Luke's 1. The reds made repeated attacks for some time, but erratic shooting lost chances. A rally by the blues ended In Ross Just missing the net. Clever work by Ross again gave the blues au opening, tilt Don shot wide of the net. St. Luke's were soon back to the blues' circle, and only a stubborn defence kept the net intact. A penalty to the reds failed to increase their score, and the students raced to their opponents' circle. Ross dashed for the goat, but Carson cot In his kick and cleared to the sideline.
