STEAMERS DELAYED.

WATERSIDERS , ATTITUDE. OVKKTIME WORK BEFL.SED. DIFFERING REASONS GIVEN. The refusal of the waterside ■workers to continue loading the Union Company's steamer Waipiata after 5 p.m. yesterday delayed the vessel in port overnight, but work was resumed this morning, and the vessel sailed for Southern ports at midday to-day. Officials of the Waterside Workers' Union declined this morning to make any statement, but some who refused to work overtime on the vessel last evening said that the hold-up was the result of a dispute on Thursday afternoon. The men stated this morning that they had to "knock off" during a shower on Thursday afternoon, and were then dismissed for the day, although the rain ceased shortly afterwards. Their action in refusing to work overtime last evening was by way of protest. The Federal steamer Cambridge, which arrived at Wellington from Lyttelton to continue homeward loading, was again delayed by the waterside workers. When the men working on the vessel during the afternoon were told that they would be required to work overtime they refused to do so except at the old rates. This is the third time the Cambridge has been held up by watersiders in the past fortnight. The steamer was unable to work Port Chalmers \vhen the general hold-up occurred towards the end of last month; while at Lyttelton last Wednesday the watersiders refused to work overtime on the vessel. Watersiders at Lyttelton refused to work overtime on the steamer Ardenvohr this afternoon. The men working the ferry steamer and the coastal steamer John accepted overtime.
