COTTON CRISIS.

WISH FOR MEDIATION. Strong Pressure for Government Intervention. LABOUR MINISTRY REPLY. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph— Copyright) (Received 12 noon.) LONDON, September 2. The strike in the manufacturing section of the cotton industry extended further yesterday in the northeastern parts of Lancashire. The operatives' leaders are reported to be anxious for further mediation and "The Times" says that quiet moves are taking place behind the scenes to bring this about. Although no official attempt at mediation in the stride has yet been undertaken, the prospects of intervention are being actively explored by the Minister of Labour, Sir Henry Betterton. -The general situation was reviewed to-day by organisations of the operatives and of the employers, which met independently in Manchester. It is stated that the meetings had no reference to plans for mediation. The '"Daily Express," the "Daily Herald," and many newspapers in Lancashire are demanding immediate intervention in the dispute by the Government. •«< The Ministry of Labour says neither <side has sought its assistance. When its services would be welcomed- and usefully applied they would be offered with alacrity. The strikers now number 100,000 out of 230,000 employees.
