FERRY OFFICERS.

Has the Devonport S'team Ferry Company any set policy in placing their long-service officers on the retired list? From my own observations I think this is a matter that warrants more careful consideration. I have occasion to use a vehicular ferry every week and am satisfied, along with individual opinions that are to be heard among fellow passengers, that the efficiency of the service can only he maintained by placing officers in command who are capable of thinking and acting quickly in a case of emergency. In support of this I call' mention an incident that took place on the northern side of the harbour some time ago which would have resulted, in my opinion, in the boat going ashore but for a very full tide. The Ferry Company has a direct obligation to those who use and maintain their services, and the responsibilities of the control of their boats should ba placed beyond the reach of any officer who ordinarily should receive superannuation on account of advanced years. EFFICIENT- SERVICE.
