OPTICAL ILLUSIONS.

DO YOUR EYES DECEIVE YOU? (Sent in by W. Ken. •">. Hnverstock Road, Sanilringham.) Below are given several examples of optical illusions, which tend .to show how very easily the eye can be deceived. In diagram A, do you think the long lines are parallel? they appear not to be, yet extend them each way with pencil and ruler and you will* find they are so:

Via. A Study the second drawing carefully and see if you can tell which pole is the tallest 1 If you measure them with a ruler you wi]l find they are all the same height. The effect is obtained by drawing the picture, but not the poles, in perspective.

JDia.B. In diagram C, if the arc on the left of the pillar was continued upwards, would the arch be complete? It does not appear to be so, but it is. .The pillar causes the optical illusion.

When is a circle not a drclet When it looke like the one in the picture below. It is flattened on the right ami bulges ou the left, or so your eyes tell you. But really it is completely round, as all good rirelef should be.

That black-sided object in diagram E is quite baffling. First it is a small box stuck oD the large 6nes then jt is & piece cut out of the larger box.

Z)fa.£

Iu the drawing below, which object do you think ie the bigger? The left one? No! The figures are the same size, but your eyes are deceived by the peculiar shape, the position, , and the markings.

Something is wrong with these oblongs surely? However, test them with a ruler, for once again your eyes are not to be believed.
