Model Aeroplane Notes

/ I •α-^vo-

Recently I have been, in receipt of » a number of letters from boys in country 3 districts who have taken up the Lone ' Flyers' League idea with enthusiasm. y One letter which I received struck me as being particularly indicative of the '. position of quite * number of other » sports in New Zealand. He says:— "Dear Propeller,—l read your article about the Lone Flyers' League with interest and would be very pleased to ; become a member. I sent one of my 1 models up to the Auckland Winter Show, and although I was 'also entered,' > not receiving, a prize, lam by no means discouraged, and intend to be amongst ' the top raters next year if there is another competition held. I was fortunate enough to be able to come to Auckland " and see the show, and naturally spent a > good deal of my time in the aero exhibits, particularly the model section, and I must say the workmanship in the 1 models left me no doubt as to the correctness of judging. I think unless > the country boys can band together in • eueh a manner as suggested by you —that ! is the Lone Flyers' League—the town • boys will soon leave them hopelessly 1 behind, because they ean compare their i efforts and get ideas from one another constantly. We, however, in the country are long distances away from each • other and often are the oaly enthusiast > in our district. Let me know when 1 the league is formed, and I will certainly , join." k Thifi letter brings more clearly before the notice of those interested in the ' movement, the fact that the country 2 boys are at a considerable disadvantage. r However, by the formation of the league these lone flyers will be banded together, ! and if the proposals that lave been put r forward are carried out they will receive t bulletins giving the latest news in the . model aeroplane world. The response to I my article dealing with this eubject was sufficient to show that the Lone Flyers' i League ean become a possibility in the near future. Secretaries of model aero clubs might ! take the suggestion that a lone flyers' 1 section could be attached to their club, '■ and arrange to have one or two days a " year in which these boys can come into 1 a more populous centre and meet others in friendly competition. If you .are interested write me a letter and let me know what you think of it, and what idoas you may have to suggest regarding rules and regulations, entrance fees, etc. With regard to club activities, this i year ha? seen, as I pointed out last I week, a greatly increased activity in ini door competition work, and naturally a - wonderful increase in the records put ~ up. However, with the summer coming •on it would be advisable to look to your i outdoor kits and sort out a model that g is going to do something big this coming r season. In Auckland and Christchurch 3 fuselage models are becoming increasa ingly popular, and quite rightly so, in ~ r my opinion, because they are. more I like tho real 'plane, and it has been I amply proved that they can fly for very J long periods. e Scale models—that is those that fly— 1 are not to be neglected because I think c that this coming season there will be , quite a few competitions given for this i type. j I received a-photograph from one of oj«r. South Island clubs, aud though there were i few spar models I wae pleased to see the fuselage and scale type of machine predominating. In passing I would like "tb mention that there ifl in Auckland a scale model ' 5.E.5. flying biplane which has actually ? done 37 seconds, ia open competition, 1 and has touched the minute mark unofficially, there is no doubt that a 3 machine like' this circling round overhead looks very realistic, and creates a great L deal of enthusiasm amongst the spectators. So many requests have been made to me for the plans of this model that I hope in the very near future to give you a three view layout scale plan to work from. Any particular machines that you would like me to publish the details of, drop me a line and if I can possibly manage to obtain the plans I will be pleased to include them in my notes lor your use. New Zealand Model Aeroplane Association Notes. Owing to tfie change over of the secretary some correspondence has unfortunately got a little behind. However, our energetic secretary, Mr. A. B. Nicholson, promises all correspondents thattheir claims, affiliations, etc., will be dealt with right away. For the information of club secretaries who have not rules and regulations to work from these may be obtained by sending a stamped addressed envelope to Propeller, care of the "Auckland Star."
