ALONG THE STREET.

An old man leaning against a gate. Stroking his beard with a skinny hand; Two half-blind horses flicking at flies. Half asleep as they stand. Middle-aged women picking flowers. Mixing the red, green and brown; Children romping among the blooms. Shaking the petals down. A wrinkled old man twirling a stick With a far-away look in his eyes; Five sparrows astride on an overhead wire. Pointing their tails at the skies. Hundreds of people.. hundreds of houses. Hundreds of streets in a city; Hundreds of hearts beating quickly with love. Or slowly with sadness and pity. . Hundreds of cities, hundreds of lands. Laughter and youth.'age and tears; Hundreds of people walking together Down the stairs of the years. Old men and sparrows, and horses and flowers, Children and women and flies— Tis despair to ask what becomes of each one When it tires of its beauty and dies. So some build temples to unknown gods. And others to home and duty; But the i-rend for me is a rover's faith In the endlessness of beauty. —CiIKISTINK COMBER. Auckland.
