ARTIST'S TRAGEDY OF POVERTY. The tragedy of an artist who, unknown to his W if e> was penniless, was revealed at a Paddington inquest on John livans (&/), *ho was found gassed in his studio at Church Street, Kensington. In a letter addressed to his wife Evans Jfrote: "I am very sorry it has come to this, and that I appear to be deserting you. I am very near the end of my resources. .. . There is no possibility oi jny getting work, for I am 57% incapacitated through failing eyesight. Mre. Evans said she did not live with Her husband in his studio, as there was Ho room. He was most generous in supporting her, and she had no idea he was penniless. A verdict of death from coalgas poisoning self administered while 01. Unsound mind was returned.
