Kritscli, Wellington. # ♦ * # The Canterbury College Board of Governors, at its meeting this week, decided to congratulate Mrs. A. Elizabeth Kelly on having two pictures accepted for exhibition at this year's Paris Salon. Mr. W. M. Hamilton said that Mrs. Kelly was a former pupil of the Canterbury College School of Art. The fact that her work had been considered on its merits worthy of acceptance by the Salon, and of reproduction in the Salon's catalogue, reflected great credit on the artist and on the school. His motion that the congratulations of the board should be conveyed to Mrs. Kelly was seconded by Miss E. A. Chaplin, and was carried. SOCIAL GATHERINGS. Mrs. Turner, of the Higher Thought Temple,- was the speaker, and her inspiring and instructive talk en "Times We're Living I 11" was enjoyed by all. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Kasper, Johnson and W-ight. f:*- » * # Miss M. Tassell gave a bridge party at her home in Tauranga on Tuesday evening. The hostess received her guests in a frock of deep blue lace. Those present were:—Misses Alison Bradmore, Olive Ar'mitage, Lindsay Tudehope, Charming Renshaw, Dorothy Armitage and Nancy Renshaw.. The' last of a series of farewell parties given to Mr. and Mrs. Trusdale was held at Mrs. C. G. Saudin's residence, Helensville, on Monday night. The rooms were tastefully decorated with violets and daffodils, and Mrs. Sandin received her guests in a floral embossed georgette frock. Amongst those present were: Mesdames J. An enjoyable dance was held at Taupaki Hall in aid of the funds of the basketball club. There was a large gathering of members and their friends, including visitors from Auckland, Oratia, Waitakere, Riverhead, Waimauku and Hobsonville. The committee was responsible for the hall decorations of black and white streamers, the club colours, and bowers of punga ferns and white roses. Competition dances added to the enjoyment of the evening. A dainty supper was served by the committee, and dancing continued until midnight. • » • • A presentation of a writer's companion and cosy cushion was made to Mrs. A. M. Parker yesterday at Onehimga by the Ladies' Benevolent Society. The president, Mrs. D. D. Scott, said they very much regretted that Mrs. Parker was leaving Onehunga. During the past 15 years that she had been secretary' of the society she had taken a kindly interest in the welfare of those in distress. The members of the society and the poor of Onehunga would alike miss her friendly advice and warm sympathy. Mrs. J. E. Green was appointed secretary to succeed Mre. Parker. • ■ • • • During the past few months an enthusiastic sewing guild has been active at Devonport in connection with the Welfare Committee. It was decided to terminate the guild's activities for thei summer months. As these meeting were held each week at the , residence of Mrs. A. t G.. Lunn,. the .members decided to recognise in a. small way Mrs. Lunn's many acts of'kindness and hospitality, so a special afternoon was arranged yesterday. The Mayoress, • Mrs. H. P. W. Meikle, on behalf of the guild, presented Mrs. Lunn with a Doulton, tray; at the same time commenting upon the very happy hours spent- with her, and the many generous actions of Mrs; Lunn. Mr. Lunn, in returning thanks on behalf of his wife, gave an outline of the activities of the association. He stated that the Ladies' Guild had made some 200 articles of clothing for those in distress. Vocal and i instrumental items were rendered by Mrs. Harrison, Mre. Topliss and Mrs. A. G. Lunn. Mre. Cowie was presented with a gift for being the most regular attendant at the guild, while Mrs. Trayes won a competition prize. : » • • . • An enthusiastic gathering was present at the "ladies' social night," held by the Eden and Roskiil Ex-Servicemen's Club at their club rooms in Dominion Road, on Thursday, September 1. Among those present were Mr. T. McNab, Mayor of Mount Eden, Mr. A. S. Richards, M.P. for Roskiil,. Lieutenant-Colonel Dawson, C.M.G., and Mr. W. Kendall, representing the Returned Soldiers' Association. The guests were received by the president, Mr. : L. A. Tozer, and Mrs. Tozer. The musical programme included Madame V. Paskell, Mrs. John Holt, and the Misses May Akerstin, Joan Tucker, Dot Lawson, Joyce Coleman, Wilma Lockwood, June Breere, Joyce Trainer, Jessie Boyd, Jesmond Hiscott, Daphne Lockwood, Joy Watts, Messrs. A meeting of the W.C.T.U. was held in the ITorthcote Methodist schoolroom on Thursday. Mrs. Neal, of the medical section, and Miss Read were in charge. Mrs. Neal gave a short history of the movement, its aims, and also described the harmful effects of alcohol on the human body. Mrs. Hulbert was elected president. • • • • The Legion of Frontiersmen, held an "At Home" on Wednesday for the ladies of the auxiliary of the legion in their clubrooms. Captain W. Palmer, 0.C., made reference to the valua-ble work done by the ladies, who, by means of working bees each week, gave practical aid to exservicemen. Items were contributed by Messrs. W. Harris, D. Middletori, Sharpe, Foreshore and Meikle. A lecture by Lieutenant Lewin, M.M., was much appreciated. The evening concluded with dancing. ,'..-•
