POINTS FROM LETTERS.

THE WAKATERE. I was particularly interested in your remarks some few evenings ago about tlie old Wakatere. It was mentioned that she was purchased on the stocks by the Northern Steamship Company, and also that she was originally intended for the Isle of Man service. Mr. Henry M. Napier, of Messrs. Napier and Miller, Ltd., builders of the Wakatere, contradict this. According to his version she was never designed for the Isle of Mar service, but definitely contracted for the Northern Steamship Company, and launched on May 30, 1896. These facts have been taken from a letter from Mr. Napier to an Auckland shipping enthusiast, and in view of the doubt they cast -upon the old ship's early history, I am ke«n to hear the opinions of those familiar with coastal shipping history.
