OBITUARY.

MR. F. W. RUTHERFORD. A resident of New Zealand since 1860, Mr. Francis Walter Rutherford, of Epsom, died on August 20, aged 74. He was a son of Colonel Henry Rutherford, of the Royal Bengal Horee Artillery, and was bom in London. He came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship Warrior Queen in 1866. The family settled at Dunedin, but afterwards were sheep farming in Otago and Wairarapa. For a time Mr. Rutherford' was in partnership with the late Mr. William Simcox in the Forest Lakes Property, Otaki. He married Miss Eleanor Gertrude Galway, daughter of the late Mr. William Galway. For 20 years Mr. Rutherford was associated with Messrs. W. N. Nelson, and W. H. Milward, in pioneering the frozen meat trade in New Zealand. In 1913 Mr. Rutherford retired to a sheep farm in the Auckland district. For the last five years he lived in Auckland. He is survived by Mrs. Rutherford and the following children: Messrs. F. L. and Gordon Rutherford, Mrs. H. B. Morton, jun., of Auckland, and Mrs. M. B. Gordon, of Walton. MR. ARCHIBALD DON. Mr. Archibald Don, who was well known in musical circles throughout the Dominion, died on Saturday. He was born in Dunedin in 1882, and when a boy was the youngest member of the Kaikorai Brass Band. When 14 years of age he was leader of a drum and fife band, and later was also a well known organist. Mr. Don was for 10 years conductor to the Gisborne Band and deputy conductor of the Gisborne Orchestral and Operatic Societies. For 10 years he wae conductor of four musical societies in Hastings, and also officiated as choirmaster for a church. Mr. Don composed and conducted the Maori opera "Marama." During his residence in Auckland he was conductor of the Savage Club orchestra, and' also choirmaster at St. Paul's Methodist Church, Remuera. He is survived by his wife. MR. D. 0. POLSON. A well known and respected resident of Ponsonby, Mr. Oliver Poison, died at the Public Hospital on Saturday evening, at the age of 44 years. Mr. Poison took a prominent part in the affairs of the district for many years. He had been hon. secretary of the Ponsonby Social Club since its inception over twelve years ago, and three years ago was made a life member. He was a prominent member of the Auckland West Labour party, was a vice-president of the Victoria Cruising Club, took an active interest in all forms of sport, and was for some years secretary for the Ponsonby United Rugby Football League Club. During the Great War, Mr. Poison was for three years on active service.
