DEATH FROM SHOCK.
TRAMWAY CONDUCTOR'S END. HEAD COLLIDED WITH POLE. A verdict of death from shock as the result of injuries received in a collision with a tramway pole at Onehunga on August 5 last, was returned by the coroner, Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., at Onehunga this morning, concerning the death of George McLean, tram conductor, of Quadrant Road, Onehunga, who died in the Auckland Hospital on the day of the accident. A girl aged nine years said she noticed the tramcar was travelling fast as it passed her at ■ the clock pole in Lower Queen Street, Onehunga. She saw the conductor lean out and noticed that his head struck the pole and that he fell off the car into the street.
A boy 8 years of age said he saw the conductor lean out over the side of the car next to the clock pole. He thought it was for the purpose of spitting something out of his mouth. When he leaned out he was struck by the pole.
A doctor said death was caused by a fracture of the skull on the left side.
