VERONICA WINS.

NAVY LEAGUE'S TROPHY. CONTESTS AT LAUTOKA. Advice lias been received in Auckland that H.M.s. Veronica has won this year's contest for the Veronica Cup. The sloop is at present away from port on an Island cruise. The contest was decided at Lantoka, Fiji, the other competing ships being H.M.s. Diomedc and H.M.s. Laburnum. Both pulling and sailing races were held to find the winner of the trophy. The Veronica Cup was presented by the Auckland branch of the Navy League in commemoration of the splendid work done by the men of the Navy at the time of the Hawke's Bay earthquake last year. H.M.s. Veronica was at Napier when the disaster occurred. The inscription on the cup is: "Presented to the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy by the Auckland blanch of the Navy League to commemorate and ill appreciation of the squadron's invaluable aid during the time of the Hawke's Bay earthquake." It was decided by the naval authorities that the trophy should be decided by a pulling race for the men over a course of one mile and sailing races for both officers and men. Two whalers from each ship competed in the races.
