MEAT AGREEMENT.
EFFECT ON NEW ZEALAND. INFORMATION INSUFFICIENT. People connected with the meat trade in Auckland are frankly in a fog as to the effect of the Ottawa agreement on the meat export trade of New Zealand. On the face of it, the agreement looks perfectly simple to the layman—Britain agrees to limit the amount of Argentine chilled beef to be allowed in. But it is pointed out that there are so many exceptions, so many possible variations, that no one in Auckland in a responsible post is willing to hazard an opinion. One authority pointed out that there was no comment from the meat experts Who went to Ottawa with the political delegation. Their silence was taken to mean that the net result of the Ottawa agreement concerning meat was not yet fully realised, even by people in the very best position to judge of the effect on the Dominions. The best opinion in Auckland was that it would be impossible to say how New Zealand will be' affected. until the full details of the Ottawa agreement are published. The mere fact that the Argentine's export of chilled beef to Britain has been limited has no significance until the details of the "agreed programme" mentioned in the cablegrams are known. I
