DAMAGE TO DICTIONARY.
PUZZLE-SOLVERS IX LIBRARY. A statement that two men seeking to solve a word puzzle competition tore the section of words beginning with "d" from a valuable dictionary at the Sydney Public Library, city., was made at the Central Police Court recently. Two labourers were charged with having maliciously damaged the dictionary, which wae the property of the Now South Wales Government, and worth £2. They were each fined £1, with £1 16/ costs and compensation, in default six days' imprisonment. Evidence was given that the men explained to the librarian that ' they wanted to sec dictionaries to attempt to solve a puzzle, and two dictionaries were handed to them for research. When they returned the volumes, the section mentioned had been torn from one of them
