TROTTING.

THE AUCKLAND MEETING. PURELY LOCAL GATHERING. REVIEW OF HANDICAPS. The appearance of the handicaps, published- yesterday, for the programme of events to be decided at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday week will draw attention to the fixture, which, by the way. opens the season in the North Island. As the only horses entered from the South Island are Ayrmont Chimes and Brentlight. and it is possible they may not be benight north, the meeting for the time being can be regarded as a purely local affair. The entries are not large, and it is to lx> hoped that i\ll the horses entered will see the post, otherwise the fields will be on the small side in several events. Still, all the best of the horses trained in the province will be found lining up, and the material is there to provide interesting racing. The August Handicap. In the principal event, the August Handicap, a 4.3G class, nine horses have been handicappel. Two, Carnui and Prince Pedro, are on the limit, and both j will have friends. Carnui is wonting better than before the winter meeting, but he would require to do so if he is to will, Prince Pedro failed to win at the winter meeting, but he went a couple of solid races, and he will be a difficult horse to beat this time. He niade solid improvement last season, and is now a smart .pacer. Dan Direct and Real Girl arc on 24yds, but though both "are useful sorts there is nothing in their recent form to suggest that either would win on Saturday week. Real Girl may be an improved mare now that she is trained at Te Awamutu. Anon. 36yds, has a tine turn of speed, and she is a likely winner at any time. Ayrmont Chimes, Gold Treaeure, and Kewpie's Triumph are on 48yds. Gold Treasure is not likely to be fancied, ns he is not consistent enough, but Ayrmont Chimes and Kewpie's Triumph are fine pacers, and both can stay. Peter Pirate is a long way back, on 84yds. There will be plenty of opportunities after the acceptances to review the handicap again, but at present Ayrmont Chimes, if brought up for the meeting, Prince Pedro, and Kewpie's Triumph may be the favoured ones.

Easy Money. Pegaway claims two engagements at the 'Auckland meeting, and, unless he does something wrong, he should have no difficulty in winning both. He is handicapped on 24yds in a 3.36 mile and a half, and is on the front of a 2.57 mile and a quarter. None of the horses opposed to him appears to have any chance at all of beating him. and he is a " money for nothing" proposition. The Fast Sprint. The second " leg" of the double is the Massey Memorial Handicap, a 2.50 mile and a quarter. Dad's Hope. Oliver Thorpe, Master Huia, and Little Guy are on the limit, and of the four Little Guy and Master Huia should go well. Brentlight and Direct Morning, on 24yds, are speedy, and, if the track happens to be heavy, Direct Morning will be a very hard horse to beat. Anon, 36yds. appeals, and. further back, Ayrmont Chimes and Kewpie's Triumph, on 48vds, are to be reckoned with. A trio likely to have friends at this stn<re are Little Guy, Anon, and Direct Morning. Her Chance. With only half a dozen in the Royal Oak Trot, 3.38 class; Parrish Belle : ]ias every chance to put herself,'again on "gide with her admirers. To date she has 'not shown herself to be a class trotter by a long way, but she would not require to be anything out of the ordinary to win at the approaching meeting, as the class, always bearing in mind the handicap marks, is by no menus good. Parr'ish Belle is never noticed doing any very strenuous work, but she ; ; a speedy and solid trotter, the onlv doubt about her being her staying ability.
