THE OLYMPIAD.

U.S.A. PROMINENT.

Fills the Places in 110 Metres Hurdles. TOLAN WINS BOTH SPRINTS. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 2 p.m.) LOS ANGELES, August 3. There was a record crowd of more than SO.OOO at the Olympic Stadium for the fifth day of the Games. An electro-photographic camera used semi-ofiicially on Tuesday showed that T. Hampson (Britain) made lm 49.7s in winning the SOO metres in world record time, a tenth of a second faster than timers' watches showed. Pinning Robert Hess (United States) down after two minutes and 10 seconds, Ivar Johansson (Sweden) won the middle-weight wrestling championship. Luukko (Finland) was awarded second place, and Tunyogi (Hungary) third, because of victory .over Hess on Monday. In the first heat of the 200 metres semi-linals the pace was fairly slow. Metcalfe, Simpson ami Luti, the natural qualifiers, were running just fast enough to make places. The real race was coming late in the afternoon, and they were conserving their strength.

In the second heat Elliott (New Zealand) was running in the fifth lane behind Genta (Argentina), and well out in front. He got away well, and held his position until 75 metres from the finish, where he dropped to fifth place. In the straightaway lie was two yards •behind Wright. Tolan was a yard ahead of the Canadian, and the three qualifiers were six inches apart. Like the first heat it was. a slow race, despite the time, since the qualifiers in both heats can do much better when pressed.

The 200 metres final was a splendid race, with Tolan winning by a yard and a half. He would have done better than 21.2s (new Olympic record) if some one had 'been truly at his heels. Metcalfe ami Simpson fought for second, with the negro taking the place by a foot. Expectations have been fulfilled by both negroes sharing the honours. In the ISOO metres Lovelock (New Zealand) won his heat, qualifying for the final. Miller (U.S.A.) won the polo vault, with 14ft lgin, exceeding the world record by three-eighths of ah inch.
