IN TOWN AND COUNTRY. AN INTERESTING WEEK-END. FEATURES OF THE PLAY. (By RUBBERCORE.) In this column of last week, in commenting, on the result of the 72 holes medal afc Middlemore, I had the temerity to ask what had become of the lowmarkers. As if in defence of those of that status, Alan Donald's 76 of Saturday furnished a reply as refreshing as it was effective. Though Donald has a bag full of simply delightful shots, his fown for several seasons, as a whole, has not been so good as to really satisfy him, due simply to the fact that he had rather got away from solid competitive play. Latterly, however, he has had a certain amount of golf in company where pains and accuracy are required. The added concentration has done the rest. His return to form is most welcome, as he is much too good a player for his game to die, as it were, in his hands. At random, his golf of the past four weekends has been uniformly good, and who knows that with the coming of the club championship he might not give a real taste of his English standard. His dual win will at least give him confidence. At Middlemore.

"Plum" also bade fair to reach the clubhouse with a card much to his satisfaction, but those few missed opportunities on the green that can cause really fine rounds to mount, were between him and the standard scratch score. Plumley's form so far, though not brilliant, is fairly effective. Ho can generally be depended on to get the figures at a pinch. Of the others C. H. Archer may view the position as satisfactory, A slight improvement on his last round would leave the field with the catching to do—and such is not easy in medal tests. Stedman's Show Up.

A>t Glendowie a bogey provided the bill of fare, and o*ie may perhaps observe that results from the club would appear awry, were A. Stedman not prominent. The brothers would seem to have had rather a remarkable run of success to date. Ha\.ng rather lost track of (the individual doings of the pair, one is left merely to express it that even commencing with the family victory at Akarana, the winning of competitione has become something of a hobby. Each shows good promise. As an antidote to tennis "A.C." no doubt finds the game most alluring. The only other card of note was that of F. Trice. The veteran still continues to play well. Eliiffe Cup Matches.

Quite apart from the quality of the golf the matches in the EllifFe Cup at Maungakiekie were full of interest, the stipulated round not having been enough in a. number of instances. Calderwood

had a hard game with a long marker in J. Caughley, , perhaps better known in Dominion bowls. A nicely balanced 38 homeward just enabled Calderwood to win

on the last green. It was here also that Stichbury beat Carnaehan .after having been down in the opening stages: As a ne-vy-player Stichbury shows remarkable progress. J. S. Rankin, who plays from the 6 mark, and whose form in recent inter-clube has been good, had a battle royal with .F. .Eostgard till a birdie 4 at the 20th gave'him the win.

Perhaps the gem of all was R. O. Gardner s match with Michael, in which the latter had the lead with two holes to go. A poor drive by Gardner at the 17th did not enhance his prospects, especially as his. opponent'-hit! a serviceable second to the green. Gardner, however,', has a penchant for doing the unexpected, and following a fair second shot promptly holed his chip. Michael could not live up to the occasion, and finally admitted defeat at the 19th. It was quite a bright spot for Gardner,.who is nothing if not tenacious. The other match of note was L. B. Schnauer's defeat of A- K. Hawley. Dormy two, Schnauer added the finishing touches'by winning the seventeenth. The performance .was a good one, as Hawley's golf is uniformly good. Out at Papakura. Championship qualifying rounds at Papakura indicate that Herman has a margin of superiority, though it is significant that Cooke, last year's winner, is next on the list. Cooke's" win was at the expense of the then champion, Ohlson, who, by the way, is not an entrant this year. . Gilmore's round at Manukau was also good) while Wardell, as one having had an almost life-long interest in: the.' game, would have no regrets at his 80. It can be accepted that one of the pair is likely to be a finalist.

Youth had • its share of success at Waiuku in the defeat at the twenty-third hole of Seymour Colbeck by.A. Herrold. The latter , showed considerable promise last season,, and though not'so sound, dn style as his then clubmate Peter Howden, compared more' than favourably with j other lads in the outlying clubs.' C. E. I Howden experienced little trouble with J C. Herrold, but his win was. not at the expense of" so sound a golfer "as was Ohlson's, who met" .an experienced opponent in Jack Forbes. The future appears to hold the likelihood of Ohlson and Howden again fighting out what has become an annual battle. Akarana Prospects. What promises to be an interesting position is being reached at Akarana, and should events work out B. J. Smith and J. M.. Coltman will meet, as the more brilliant Smith will command a strong iollowing. To be weighed against this, however, is the fact of. Coltman being a strong match player and in receipt of several strokes allowance. The match, should it eventuate, should be a good one, Franklin Challenge Clip. To revert to country clubs, the remaining item of interest lay in Pukekohe's visit; to Waiuku'for the Franklin Teams Chal-i lehge Cup, played for on the principle of the Kirk-Wiudeyer contest. ."The: .leadingpair, Coyle and Johnson, played well :in' defeating Howden and Forbes,, and at the: end held an advantage of three ..' holes.! Bloomfield and Ohlson turned .the' > tables for Waiuku, however, defeating ' Lawson' andMaddison by two holes. Coyle was : again in fine form in the singles, winning; from Howden at the eighteenth,; while Bloomfield and Johnson finished all square Piikekohe was thus four holes' to''the good, but with a sound 78 Ohlson defeated Lawson, 5 up. It was left to Forbes to put the issue beyond doubt, and the veteran answered all demands by winning from Maddison with a margin of six holes. The feature of the matches was the splendid golf played by Coyle, whose form has been more consistent this season than any other player's in the Franklin area. Mention may perhaps be made that in the recent match with the Hamilton Club, though dormy five down to J. L. Black, Coyle put up a most determined finish, to be beaten only 1 up. Titirangi Abroad. Titirangi's visit to Hamilton was rather a sad affair —though only from results on the links. The fact that illness and other causes prevented the club's main strength from being assembled caused it to be much of sending a boy oh a man's errand. In the seniors, apart from Good's lone win, the outstanding performance was McCrystal's all square with Black. The golf" played by the pair was up to the traditions of leaders, and the result a fair indication of the merits of the play. For once Brins-; den had a lapse—but possibly all the dogs have barked about it. ANOTHER HOLE IN ONE. Playing on the Warkworth links during the week-eivl. L. Strange holed the eighth (130 yards) in.one. This is the first occa J . . sion a- hole in one has., been recorded on the present links.
