ELLIOTT IN SEMI-FINAL. S. A. BLACK IS ELIMIriATED. SAVIDAN QUALIFIES IN 5000. IX>S ANGELES, August 3. In the quarter finals of the 200 metres event Metcalfe (U.S.A.) never was seriously pressed to win the first heat and set a new Olympic record of 21 5-10s. Tolan (U.S.A.) won the second heat even more handily by four yards, also in 21 5-10s. The third heat brought out apparently even faster company, for Luti (Argentina) ran it in a new Olympic record time of 21 4-10s. Against such a perform : ance Black (N.Z.) was handicapped. Luti finished two yards ahead of Simpson (U.S.A.), with Joubert (South Africa) right behind, and Yoshioka a bad fourth. The New Zealander was 10 yards behind the Japanese. Elliott j(N.Z.), in the fourth heat, also was bracketed with extremely fast performers, and he demonstrated his fleetness clearly. He led the Canadian, Wright, for second place, to within six inches of the finishing line, and was beaten by two inches. Half a yard separated Wright from Jonath (Germany), who equalled 21 4-10s. Elliott's time was well within the old Olympic record. In the first heat of the 5000 metres Ralph Hill (United States) went into the lead with Savidan (N.Z.) second, Dean third, Virtanen fourth, Lindgrea fifth, and Hillhouse sixth.. The race was held practically the same for six laps, when Savidan went into the lead with Hillhouse (Australia) dropping into seventh mlace. Hillhouse worked back into fifth place in the eighth lap, when Savidan fell back into second place. The race took on a new complexion in the tenth lap, when, with Hill. leading, the Finns began to move up, Vertanen to second, place, Lehtinen to third, and Lingren to fourth, Savidan dropping back to fifth, and Hillhouse to sixth, 150 yds behind. ' Twenty yards separated the first five. The last lap was a spurt, Virtanen for a moment trying to contest for the first place with Hill, but failing. The me"n finished as indicated. Seven qualified for the finals. _ ;j The Australian cyclist E. L. Gray gained another victory last evening in the 1 third heat of the 1000 metres'scratch race. He was pitted against Gervin (Denmark). His time for the last 200 metres was 12 9-lOs; He showed an improvement on Monday evening. Italy won the first Olympic cycling championship for a four-man ■ team, by defeating France in the finals of the 4000 metres pursuit race. Later results on Tuesday:— 200 Metres.
