AFFAIRS OF THE BOARD.

An appeal for funds for the relief of unemployment distress was received by the Auckland Harbour Board from the chairman of the Metropolitan Unemployment Relief Committee yesterday afternoon. "Any grant that we make will have to come out of unauthorised expenditure," commented the chairman, Mr. G. R. Hutchinson, in moving that the appeal be referred to the board in committee, with power to act.

The Franklin County Council thanked the board for granting permission for the removal, free of royalty, of approximately 2600 cubic yards of mud shell from the Manukau Harbour for use on the Awhitu-Orua Bay Road.

The Institution of Civil Engineers, London, submitted a report on the result of investigations into the deterioration of structures exposed to sea action. It was decided to contribute the sum of £5 annually for the next five years to the funds of the institution. It was mentioned that in the past the board's subscription had been £10 annually.

Canon Fancourt, vicar of St. Mary's Cathedral, extended an invitation to the chairman and members of the board to be present at the special "men's service" to be held on the afternoon of Sunday, August 28.

It was decided to approve of the plan for the building proposed to be erected by Fruit Markets, Ltd., on section 3, adjoining the fish market site.

A report by Mr. J. B. Johnston to the effect that the sub-committee of the finance committee set up to deal with the agreement between the Railway Department, the Auckland City Council and the Harbour Board regarding the roading of the old railway station site had met the chairman of the Railways Board, and that a satisfactory arrangement had been arrived at in regard to the payment of compensation by the board to the Department for the provision of right-of-ways, was received.

A request that the board should grant a 50 per cent concession in the wharfage and cranage charges on New Zealand stone wa3 referred to the board in committee.

The Green Bay Beach Improvement Association asked, the board to build a wall at the end of the beach in order to provide increased bathing space, and also to clear the beach of large stones. The request was referred to the Manukau committee, and the engineer and harbourmaster were asked to report on the proposal.
