SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A dance held in the Drury Hall on Saturday was organised by Misses Brookes, Gardiner and Kinlook, in aid of the Drury school funds. Visitors were present from Pukekohe, Karaka and Papakura. Music was played by Mr. Clarke and Mrs. Clewe, of Papakura. During the supper interval, Mr. Rankin, on behalf of the echool committee, voiced their thanks to the ladies' committee for their efforts.

A social evening was spent recently at the home of Mrs. Guest, Dexter Avenue, Mount Eden, when old friends assembled to bid farewell to Mrs. and Mies" Snell, who are leaving for England. Dancing was indulged in and a number of musical items rendered. At the cloee of the evening Mr. Tinkler, of Remuera, on behalf of Mrs. Guest and friends, presented Mrs. Snell with a handsome travelling rug and Miss Renie Snell with a neat handbag.

An enjoyable evening was held last Saturday night at the residence of Mr. and Mre. W. Armitage, Pupiike Road, Takapuna, in aid of funds for the Milford Girls' Surf Life Saving Club. The prizes were won by Meedames Thompson and Lloyd and. Messrs. Brown and R. Sharp. Amongst the players were: Mesdames H. Armitage, W. Armitage, O. Shilton, Ogden, Maddren, Thompson, Brown, Lloyd, Edgar, Sheriff, Wright, Misses C. Sheriff, M. Allen, A. Awnitage, D. Maddren, J. Lloyd, Streton and R. Thompson.

The annual meeting of the St. Helier's Bay Croquet Club wae held on July 30, when Mrs. Lowe presided. The officers elected for the ensuing fieason were: President, Mrs. Lowe (re-elected); vicepresidents, Mesdames Warren and St. Clair Inglis; hon. secretary, Miss Appleyard; treasurer. Mre. White; general committee, Mesdames Negus, King and Roberts; match and green committee, Mesdames Lowe, Clark and St. Glair Inglis; delegates to association, Mrs. Lowe and j.liss Appleyard.

A meeting of the Drury branch of the women's division of the Farmers' Union was hnld recently, when Mrs. Rankin ■presided. Delegates were elected for the next meeting of the Waitemata provincial council, and arrangements were made for the social evening to ba held in August, to raise funds for the division. Several new ideas were used for the first time, the library and the exchange table proving quite successful. A competition was won by Mrs. D. Bincley, with Mrs. Sharpe second. Mre. E. Fielding gave an instructive demonstration of the icing of a cake. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdamee Rankin, Legge, Colson and J. Cossey.

Over thirty members and supporters of the Edendale Cricket Club were present at an evening given in aid of the club at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Earwaker, at Camden Road, Sandringham. The rooms were very tastefully decorated with the club colours, and a flag "500" tournament-provided a most enjoyable evening's entertainment until a late hour. Prizes .were won by Mrs. Carrie, Misses Grayson and Chambers, and Messrs. Carrie and Miller. Among the guests were Mesdames Carrie, Mills, Markwick, Warin. W. J. Earwaker, Misses Chambers, Hunter, Warin, Ferrif, Gemmell, Grayson, Earwaker, S.mith and Arns.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Newdick, of Goldsmith Road,. Epsom, gave a dance at their residence on Saturday evening in honour of the birthday of Mr. S. Ward, Richmond Road. The reception room and lounge were used for dancing, large bowls of wattle and arum lilies and high stands of daffodils being used in decoration. The drawing and dining rooms, also the supper table, were arranged with high vases of irises, cornflowers and flat bowls of primroses. Musical items were interspersed with the dancing. Mrs. Newdick received her guests in a Honiton lace appliqued with black taffeta; Mrs. Ward wore ivory georgette and glace silk; Mrs. J. Shaw, black Chantilly lace; Mrs. L. Robinson, salmon pink georgette and lace; Mrs. D'Arthe, black ninon and velvet; Mrs. T. Briars, powder blue silk lace; Mrs. L. Hammond, black Mechlin lace; Mrs. ABellwood, black Mechlin lace; Mia? Marjorie Duncan, lemon and green taffeta; Miss Kathleen Cooper, floral embossed georgette.

The appeal for funds made by the Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society through the foresters' Bowls Association was responded to by Court Maid Marian, ladies' brand), of the A.0.F.,» who held a social evening on Monday last in the Foresters' Hall, Albert Street, for the purpose of raising funds for the society. Brother Spinley, secretary of the Bowls' Association, introduced to the gathering the Rev. Mr. Moreton, who, in thanking the Court for the assistance they had rendered, gave a short and interesting resume of the work that it we- his office to undertake. The musical part of the evening's entertainment was catered for by Sister Leece and Brother White.

A dance was held recently in the Te Hoe Hall, when the Basketball Club ■ and the Girls' Club combined in an effort to raise funds for both sides. Novelty items, in the form of a. black and white pierrot ballet, a dance duo, and a Bet of exercises were enjoyed. A book afternoon was held by the Ever-Ready Committee of the Victoria League in the league rooms yesterday afternoon, when a splendid collection of books and magazines, which will be eventually eent to settlers in the backblocks, was received. There were present about 50 members and their friends and each gueet gave one book or more as the price of admission. The result was that yesterday's collection surpassed all others. The guests were received on their arrival by Miss Mowbray, president of the league, and by Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane, chairman of the ever-ready committee, who later, in the absence of Miss Feiiton, chairman of the book committee, thanked the guests for their donations. Miss Mowbray also spoke and referred to the daffodil fair to be held in the league rooms in September. During tho afternoon an interesting competition was held, Mrs. Runcinian winning the first prize and Miss Burnett the second. The hostesses for the afternoon were: Mesdames P. Rkeate, Preston Chambers, R. Cruickshank, Pearson, W. M. Paesmore, Redmond, McLachlan, Dowell and Miss Kelly.
