RACING AT GISBORNE.

THE FAREWELL MEETING. TELLER WINS WINTER OATS. HAWTHORN THE TRAMWAY. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") GISBORNE; Thursday. Heavy rain during the past two days and intermittent showers throughout today, made the going heavy at the Park, when the final meeting of the Gisbbrne Racing Club, after 43 years' existence, was commenced. The racing was keen and the local horses more than held their own with visitors, who made up -nearly half the acceptors. Lordly Knight won the open sprint and Teller the Winter Oats, both successes being achieved convincingly. The totalisator handled £3395, against *f<lll2 for the first day last year. Practically All the Way. * Thd hurdles resulted in a good win for the locally-trained maiden hurdler Million, who paid nearly double figures. The race ■was won practically from end to end, and the winner was really never in danger of defeat. Neil and St. Ames showed very moderate form arid were never likely after the first mile. Kaiti was the first to show out, but Million led over the first hurdle and held command practically from then on. Neil and St. Ames were handy over the first round, but with three furlongs to go Million and Kaiti drew right away and had the finish to themselves. The winner gained appreciably at each jump, and though. Kaiti was practically on terms at the last hurdle, Million finishet far too solidly. St. Ames iell away a the finish and was headed by Manuiri and Atholspear, who -were never prominent in the earlier stages. After the placed horses, the order was Manuiri, Atholspear, B Ames and Rongo. Of the beaten lot bt. Ames should be most improved by the The Hack Flat saw Lady Vane score convincingly, and she also paid a good price. She was well back until the straight was reached and then unfolded a fine finishing run, which gave nothing else a chance. Sunglare was the early leader and was attended into the straight by Hawthorn, Rasouli and Lady Vane. Sunglare faded out and Rasouli challenged Hawthorn, but the latter held him off. Lady Vane then came on the outside and settling Hawthorn, won going away by nearly two lengths, with Rasouli a length further back. Bothwell was fourth. Returned to, Form. The Flying Handicap saw Lordly Knight return to form and score convincingly from an outsider, White Fang. Orby s Choice carried about one-third of the m* vestments and Teller was the only other seriously backed. From an excellent start Toboggan was first out, followed by Hunting Day and Lordly Knight. These three opened up a gap on the remainder Of the field, and were first into the Straight, fok lowed by White Fang and Orby s Choice. Fifty yards from the post hall a dozen horses were bunched and then. Lordly Knight shot out to ww from White Ftfng,. who also put .in a good late run, by »uif a length. Moa- Bird finished, a length away Head Seranghungon to get fourth with Orby's Choice next. ;The" latter looked likely at the turn, but; did £°t fi nif on, but Teller was ndt sighted at any stage. The Favourite LoseS RIUeK Neil, the hot favourite, failed badly in the steeplechase and Simeon, through superior jumping won nicely from the outsider Cat-i-mes. Jen was the early leader, but ran ofE at the log fence, leaving Simeon in charge, with Neil and Cat-i-mes next. Uat-i-mee quickly ran through to second and from then it was a contest between Eim and Simeon. At the log fence the second time Neil struck hard and lost his rider Tall Timber later dislodged his. Simeon and Cat-i-mes had drawn right away and they crossed the last fence on terms. In the run home, Simeon held on to win nicely by a length from Cat-i-mes, with Haumarire and Freehold a long way baok. They _ were the only others to finish. . , _' A Great Finish. Hunter's Moon, who is locally trained, was backed down to short odds .on in the Maiden Race and he duly won in a thrilling finish. Black Songster was slow away and the favourite was the pilot at the end of a furlong, followed by Swift and Sure, Reviver and Sunny Bachelor. These four made play round the turn and into the straight, where Hunter's Moon and Sunny Bachelor drew out. Black Songster then came very fast and in a great finish Hunter's Moon won by a head from Black Songster, with Sunny Bachelor halt a head away third. Hunting Jay, Reviver and Swift and Sure were next. Black Songster' was unlucky, and ' with a good jump out would have been hard to beat. Good Betting Race. The Winter Oats was a good betting race in which half the field commanded good support, with Teller at a surprisingly long price. Sunny gong was the early leader from Autumn Sun, White Fang and Good Idea. There was little change right round into the straight, where Sunny Song was still the pilot, with Teller starting a brilliant run and Good Idea falling back. Teller gave nothing else a chance over the concluding stages and won by a length from the fast-finishing Malahat, who did not show up until within the, distance. Sunny Song was a similar distance away third, and Bob In finished well into fourth place, with Good Idea fifth and Autumn Sun next. Teller's win was very convincing and he looks a -likely improver. ' The Tramway Handicap was another good betting race. Rasouli soon hit the front and led into the straight from Lady Spy, Haw,thorn, Kahunoke, Foulwind and Beverage. InMde the'distance Hawthorn came' away and won by half a length from Ras6uli, with Bird Call a head away. Lady Spy, Beverage, Foulwind and Kahunoke were next. -• Later results are:— FLYING HANDICAP of .65soys. •. Six furlongs. t , 4—LORDLY KNIGHT, B.lo— Keesing. .'•' 1 O—WHITK FA.NG, 8.9, car.. B.lO—A. .
