SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Papatoetoe branch of the Mothers' Union held a meeting in St. George's Church yesterday. The Eev. T. H. C. Partridge conducted an admission service. Miss Griffen, organising secretary of the Mothers' Union, gave an address on her experiences at the Mothers' Union conference in London. Afternoon tea, dispensed by. Mrs. Eayner and Mrs. T. Richards, closed an interesting afternoon.

The Druids' Hall, Newton, was gay on Wednesday evening, when the Thames Girls' Club held its monthly "At Home." There was a large attendance, and the function proved successful. It was organised by a committee comprising Mrs. P. McGregor, Miss Surman, Miss Aitken, Mesdames Aitken, Davison, Stubbing, Andrews, McPherson, Miller, Wright, Gribble, McGeehan, Nicholls ifeid Taylor and Mies Gillespie. . '

A social evening was arranged by Mesdames D.. Mackay*- T. Saxon and A. Wheatley on Wednesday evening in the Presbyterian Sunday school hall at Belmont. Gifts of fancy work and things suitable for sale on the fancy etall at the fair to be held in September were brought, making a goodly show. An interesting programme of games, competitions and musical items gave much pleasure to those present.

Old students of the Mount Eden College for Girls recently met together, and after a pleasant reunion formed an Old Girls' Association. Now they have presented to St. Cuthbert's College an endowed prize (the Bews Prize for Literature), together with a bronze tablet commemorating the old school of 'Mount Eden College and the principals, Misses Bewe. The tablet has been hung ifr the entrance hall of St. Cuthbert's. An illuminated booklet containing the names of those who participated in the gathering is being presented to the Misses Bews.

The Otahuhu Junior Rechabite Lodge held a successful dance in the Orpheus Hall, Otahuhu, on Tuesday night. Oldtime dance selections were- played by a good orchestra, and during supper extras played by Miss E. Webber. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mies J. Webber and Mr. 'J. Loader. On Tuesday evening Mr. Barry Coney gave a lecture to the members of the music section of the League of New Zealand Pen women. The lecturer dealt with the main principles of vocal technique, emphasising the point that the singer is merely the interpreter of other men's creations, and must possess intuition and sympathetic understanding. Hβ said: "Without adequate technique a singer's art is a structure built-upon eand, likely to collapse at any moment," arid . stressed the importance of technique. The lecture was illustrated by the following: "The Gentle Maiden," "When I am Laid in Earth," Purcell; "Ombra. ma fu," Handel; "The Erl King," Schubert; "Four by the Clock," Mallineon; "Silent Noon," "Grendon Fair," and "Molly Brannigan." Mrs. Neil acted as accompanist.

A dance was given by the commodore, flag officers and committee of the Takapuna Boating Club on Wednesday evening on the occasion of the presenting oJ trophies won during last season's boat racing. The Renown Hall was crowded last evening when the Papatoetoe Relief Workers' Association held a "hard up" social in aid of their funds. Out of a varied assortment of "hard up" costumes Mrs. Fugle and Mr. Marshall were chosen as the best couple, and Miss Tyo and Mr. Postlewaight as the best lady and 'gentleman. The judges were Mrs. L. O. M. Brown and Miss B. Parsons. Songs were given by Mrs. Gallagher, and several Highland dances by Miss McLeod, to Mr. McLeod's bagpipes. The dance music was played by Mr. and Mrs. P. Kiddell and Mr. Jarrett, assisted by Mrs. Barker, Mr. Stanley and Mr. Walker, comprising a banjo orchestra. Weight and name guessing competitions held during the evening were won by Mr. and Mrs. C. Newcombe. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs. Fugle and Mr. A. Lord. The supper arrangements were made by the ladies' committee of Mcsdames C. Newcombe, W. Postlewaight and J. Wlijte.

An At Home was held by the People's Health Society at the Labour Club rooms on Tuesday evening, when Mrs. Mary M. Dreaver, the vice-president, was hostess, and Mr. A. J. Stratford presided. An instructive lecture, from a dietetic viewpoint, was given on " Milk" by Dr. Garfleld Stewart. Mr. A. J. Stallworthy, M.P., spoke of the importance of health societies. Mr. E. C. Cutten stressed the necessity of an up-to-date health sanatorium, a " sun" peeling convalescent home, with special "dietetic facilities" under experienced medical supervision. Mr. G. C. Munns and Mr. J. W. Bissett spoke on the "Aims and objects of the society." Musical items-were interspereed by Mesdames R. O'Brien, L. King, FoxRogers, R. J. Terry, Messrs. Arthur Wright, R. N. McKay, and L. King. Miss May Beresford, Miss Orbell, Mrs. W. H. McKinnon, and Miss C. Lauri were the accompanists. Supper was under the control of Mrs. S. Kemp. Miss Olive Yoiuvg is the honorary secretary. The members of the executive present were: Mesdames E. Drake, E. Dickie, Mies I. Rutherford, and Messrs. R. McLeod and R. Tabuteau. The Belmout Dance Club held its annual carnival on Tuesday evening. St. Michael's Hall was filled, and the programme of old-time dances, during which all kinds of novelties were dispensed, was thoroughly enjoyed. The hall was specially decorated by Mr. C. Eaton and helpers, and represented the South Sea Islands, with mats, grasses, flowers. The dance was opened by a tableau and dance representing a feature of ie]a*d life, "The Birth of a Poarl." Those taking part were Ruth MacFadgen and Athol and Graham Eaton. Among the dancers were: Mrs. C.
