REGISTERED UNEMPLOYED.

liAST WEEK'S TOTAI. 54,328. NEaRLY 43,000 ON RELIEF WORK. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. A decrease of 14 in the number of registered unemployed is recorded in the official figures for New Zealand for the week ended July 4. The total number registered throughout the Dominion was 54,328, compared with 54,342 for the previous seven days. The total included 42,975 men who were employed under the No. 5 relief scheme. This left 11,353 unplaced or standing down, the smallest number for many weeks. There has been a fairly steady decrease in the number of unplaced men each week, and it is anticipated that there will be a further reduction in this total as the revised scale of relief is brought fuliy into effect. TEN-ACRE FARM SCHEME. MR. LANGSTONE'S CRITICISM. The ten-acre scheme to relieve unemployment was characterised by Mr. F. Langstone, M.P. for Waimarino, during his address in the Putaruru Town Hall recently as the "silliest scheme that ever happened." If farmers were not able to make a do of it on large areas, then they could not make a living on ten acres. The scheme, he said, meant the introduction of a condition of serfdom, such as existed 400 years ago. OTAHUHXT WELFARE ILEAGTJE. Steady progress was reported by the various committees working under the auspices of the Otahuliu Welfare League, which met on Wednesday evening. The treasurer, Mr. C. P. Downey, reported the receipt of additional moneys, and said he had been given £50 on loan without interest to finance the activities of the stores committee. Mr. V. W. Grey reported that approximately 150 families were being supplied with meat, 51, pairs of boots had been supplied and arrangements had been made for time payment. Forty workeVs had been supplied with clothing at wholesale cost price, and further' orders were being received from day to day.
