POTATO MARKET.

REPORTED SHORTAGE. XO TROUBLE WITH ORDERS. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. As a medium of speculation, potatoes have provided brokers with a good deal of excitement. A report was in circulation yesterday that forward sellers had been caught short and that they were finding difficulty in filling orders. However, a broker stated that the demand was not very strong and there was no trouble in filling orders. A lot of propaganda was going about, but he did not think anyone was very short. Just now the Auckland market wae well supplied, but it was impossible to say what would be the actual position of forward business, as the price might drop £2 per ton before the time for delivery. Ruling prices at present were £6 2/6 per ton, f.0.b., for prompt, and £6 5/ for July delivery, the market being back to the position of a month or five weeks ago. It was fairly quiet, with North Island buyers just beginning to take a little interest.' Sales had been made at £6 2/6 for next steamer sailing on Tuesday, and one had been made at £6 5/. The last price was really no indication that the market was generally up to that, though it might be in a few days.
