N.S.W. CHAMPIONSHIPS. BAD START FOR DOMINION. BKIXSDEX AND SILK SURVIVE. SYDNEY, June 19. In the first round of the New South Wales amateur singles golf championship yesterday, out of five New Zealand players only one survived. The results were:— Wagg (Xew Zealand) beat Gregory, 5 and 4; Hambleton beat Hornabrook (Xew Zealand), 1 up; Ruwald beat Rex George (Xew Zealand), 3 and 2: Glancev beat G. Tallis (Xew Zealand), 3 and 2; Hatteisley beat Black (Xew Zealand) at the 21st hole.

Withycombo fell before Dobson, 5 and 4, and Apperley was eliminated by Ryan at the 10th. In the second round New Zealanders who had a'bye in tho first fared as follows:—Garland beat Louis Seifcrt, jun. (Manawatu), 3 and 1; Bvinsden (Auckland) beat Bolger, 1 up; Siik (Wanganui) boat Mant, 0 and ;>.

The champion, Ferrier, beat Thomas, 5 and 4. Bettington, playing brilliantly, beat Spooner, 5 and 4. Wagg was eliminate! by G. Thompson, 1 up.

Thirty-two of the 90 competitors remain in for Monday, when the third and,fourth rounds will be decided. Tho weather was fine yesterday, but bitterly cold.

AUCKLAND CLUB,

CAPTAIN'S PRIZE MATCH. In almost continuous rain, with the course heavy and the greens waterlogged, the final of tho captain's tournament was played at the Auckland Golf Club, Middlemore, on Saturday, between A. E. M. Rhlnd and B. C. Thomson. A grim struggle ended on the eighteenth green in a victory for Rhlnd, 1 up. Thomson, a young player, has shown considerable .promise this season. After outdriving his opponent at the first five holes, his'tee shot went to pieces, and this proved his undoing. When two down at the seventeenth, he took his iron (which he played consistently through the fairways) off the tee, outdrove his opponent, and won the hole. He had a chance to keep the game alive at the eighteenth When presented with an S-foot putt for n. four and a win, but he just failed, and Rhind holed a live to win the match.

A four-ball best-bull bogey competition •was also pliyjeu". Among the 94 competitors were a good number of Titirangi members, who were the club's guests, while the tennis match was being played at Titirangi. The weather conditions were bo bad, however, that most of the players did not complete the round. Following were the best scores returned:—Murray and McCoy, 3 up ; West and Jones, 3 up; Zahara and Keegnn, 1 up; 11. W. Kelly and Roberts, all square ; A. A. Martin and A.
