TENNIS SENSATION.

Hopman Lowers American Champion's Colours. VINES LOSES TO TACTICIAN. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 15. There was a sensation in the London lawn tennis championships at the Queen's Club courts, when Harry Hopman (New South Wales) brilliantly defeated Ellsworth Vines, the American champion, o—o, 6—2, 6—3. The Australian discovered that Vines thrived on speed, so varied his pace cunningly. Vines showed surprising deficiency in trying to volley Hopman'e soft shots. The Australian had previously beaten W. A. R. Collins, 6—o, 6—2. The critics say that Hopman's game against Vines was as fine as anything seen during the present season. Crawford and Clemenger have reached the fourth round of the singles, but the remaining Australian, Sproule, was defeated 6—3, 6—l, by the Japanese player, Kuwabara. In the women's singles Mrs. Crawford beat Miss Cooke, 6—l, 6—l (first round); Mrs. Crawford beat Mrs. Covell, o—o, 6—o, 9—7 (second round). In the men's doubles (first round) Crawford and Hopman beat Colonel Helme and Drake, 6—l, o—o. At the forthcoming Wimbledon tennis tournament in the singles Cochet will meet Vines; Shields will meet Perry; Wood will meet Austin; and Borotra will meet Crawford.' Doubles will be played by the following:—Allison and Van Ryn Versus Crawford and Hopman; Perry and Hughes versus Borotra and Brugnon. In the mixed doubles Vines and Mrs. Helen Wills-Moody will meet Cochet and Mrs. Whittingstall; Brugnon and Madame Mathieu will meet Maier and Miss Ryan; Allison and Miss Jacobs will meet Hopman and Miss Sigart; Spence and Mies Nuthall will meet Mangin and Miss Palfrey.
