Dead Bodies
GUN DUEL WITH POLICE.
LONDON, June 14,
A mysterious triple shooting tragedy was revealed by the discovery of the bodies of two well-dressed women, aged about 65 and 35, and a girl of 13 in King's Wood, near Challoek, Kent. No weapon was found near the bodies.
The victims had been dead for some hours. It is believed that they were killed and conveyed in a motor car and dumped in the wood.
The murdered women were Mrs. Janic Swift, of Ye Okie Sportsman's Inn, Seaealter, near Whitstable,. and her daughter, Mrs. Jennie Trenayne Stemp, of the White Hart Inn, Wadhurst, Sussex. The girl was Peggy, daughter of Mrs. Stemp.
The police are using bloodhounds in the search for the murderer. Also they are seeking the car in which the three victims left Wadhurst for Seasalter..
A police flying squad quickly tracked a man suspected of the murders. A cordon was extended for 60 miles. The suspect was seen by a policeman, who challenged a man carrying a rifle by the roadside at Potter's Bar.
The armed man immediately dropped to tlie ground, lay flat and fired at the policeman, who drew his revolver. Both then fired several rounds without result.
While the suspect was reloading three policemen pounced upon him from behind. It is believed that he is a soldier belonging to the East Kent Regiment, who had disappeared from Hythe, where he was doing a musketry course.
